38s and gears

One thing that needs to be considered is what type of axle you are going to run this setup it.

If you are running a 1/2 ton or a 10 bolt, 4.10 is about as high as you can go with any tire over 35". After that you are looking at trouble.

Ideally you'd want the 14bff. I've ran 36" with 4.56s before in a 14bff, auto, and thought it was a great setup.

I'd say 4.56 or 4.88, anything higher would be overkill.
its going in a 12 bolt rear and a d44 front

with no od 4.56 will be good.od tranny later i would want 4.88 and wouldnt go any deeper on 1/2 ton stuff.38 inch tires will kill the axles as well unless it is a road warrior.i broke my 2 12 bolts on 35s so any combo above that can kill the axles quicker.

4.10 and 35's is not terrible. It's a decent choice for no O/D. 4.56 is better, but that doesn't make 4.10 terrible.

Alright I'll give you that but for an OD trans 4.10s would be a really poor choice.

still pretty new here but for what its worth id go 4:10 woth 38's any higher and you might as well put in a 14 bolt ff

I dont mean to sound like a pirate prick but for pre-emptily saying "still pretty new here" before you give advise that probably means you really shouldnt give advise.

4.10s and 38s is a terrible choice when talking about gearing whether its a big block, small block, stick, or auto.

You are 100% right in saying this guy should AT LEAST be going 8 lug with a 14b rear though.

Scott I'm gonna be completely honest with you. You keep adding fuel to the fire with this truck your talking about. A jacked up jimmy to tow... Already warned you of stability issues both laterally from lift and from short wheel base.

Not only are you making mistakes on the platform your starting with with what you want to do with this truck but now your talking about running a 12 bolt rear with 38s AND towing. Come on man you gotta give some where. Guys blow 10 and 12 bolt rears on 31s because they pull outta gravel driveways to hard. You really need to think this through and honestly stop asking for advise if your not gonna take it or even consider taking it.

i meant im new on this site not new to wheeling, so you dont know me from a hole in the wall, but for what its worth, "imo"

I have an 87 blazer with 35 inch tires, 700r4 transmission and 10 bolt with 4.56 gears. I tow a 21 foot wakeboard boat approx 4000lbs.

Around town it towed fine, going up an incline it SUCKED!! I had to drop to 2nd gear to maintane 55mph. That lasted for about 1 year then the gears in the axle grenaded. Munched 3 gears off of the ring gear.

I'll echo what some of the other are saying. If you just intend to street the truck 4.56s are probably ok but 4.88 would be more ideal with the 38 inch tires. For your combo it would be highly recommended to get a 14 bolt and if you intend to tow anything go to at least 5.13s. That is my opinion as I have already done this swap. 14 bolt, 35 inch tires and 5.13 gears. It works great!
