What all needs to be done to replace the Dana 20 mounted to a 396 with an NP205? Is it just a matter of getting the right adapter or are there significant changes that go along with it?

Never mind the engine. What transmission do You have? with out knowing that the question at hand can not be answered.

Transmission

I can't find the numbers on it, but it is a 4 speed manual. I am assuming its a sm465.

One PTO cover, or two? If it's really a Dana 20(21), it should be an sm420. Better off to change over to an sm465; much more common and better parts availability.

No, Dana 20s came married to SM465s in some first gen Blazers. No Dana 20 was ever used with a 420.

To change to a 205, you need the correct adapter and transfer case. The tranny is the same.

My Mistake, I was thinking of the sm420/rockwell t221. :doah: Now all he needs to find is an np205 with a 10 sline input; pretty easy(i have three or four). Post up a wanted ad.
