396 vs 454 bigblock engines

Ive heard said once " If he (the seller) says its a 383 stroker, its a 305. If he says its a 400, its a 350" I have actually seen this happen, but not always accurate. The guy can say its a built 350 all day and that doesnt mean squat. It could have come from the junkyard with 250k miles, gotten new rings and bearings, and is now "built"

haha. yeah this kinda happened to me. Seller told me it was a 305 but it was really a 350. :haha: It took me almost a year before i found out.

It's the "baby" of the big block family....better suited to a musclecar than a heavy truck.

x2. i like them in chevelles. not better than a 454, but more than enough muscle and it's fun to say you have one. but yeah, for a truck, 454 would be better imo.

i got lucky too. they told me it was a 305 because it had 305 heads, but the boneheads didn't realize they were 305 HO heads from a camaro and the engine itself was a 350. doesn't really matter since i blew it about 5K miles later :haha:. that's ok. the 350 i have now moves the truck just fine.
