Im trying to hook one up.But Im stuck on the wireing. If I hook it to the brake then it will flash with the blinker too.....??
How do I wire this thing? It should be the same as a trailer right? :dunno:

It should be wired up to a second brake light switch, that's what it's there for.

Nah, the trailers have combo brake/turns... least the four-wire kind do.

Yellow and green are brake/turn left and brake/turn right, brown is marker ("parking") lights and white is ground, IIRC.

Anyway... I messed with this, and it's not simple, unless you add another separate switch circuit or there's one already there?

You could actually make the existing switch drive a DPDT relay and use the two sides as two switches, one for the factory circuit and one for your own that isn't connected with the turn signals.

You could replace your brake switch on there now with a switch that has the connectors for two circuits. Pretty common in the 80's GM vehicles of all types.

Still not really the way it should be done, the point is to have a brake light if the primary lights fail, which could be the switch, etc.

I always though the point was to grab attention and if 3 lights are on you KNOW hes brakeing...

Are you talking about the switch the brake pedal touches?
Would one from say a 85 truck fit?
I just need to know what to ask for at autozone.

Yes one should fit. If anything changed, it was likely the connector only. Pretty simple setup. Just compare yours to what they have before purchase.

3rd brakelight wouldn't be wired completely separate from the mains if it wasn't a safety deal. I know you've seen just as many people running around with no brake lights as I have, and you more than likely noticed the 3rd one was still working. Of course, the bulb can't be burned out. :)

Hey Dyeager If I come off one of the two wires on the brake switch @ the brake pedel [the hot one],
then back all the way to the light then it grounds itself.....will that work? With out flashing with the blinkers.

Hey I`ve seen lots of 3rd lights burned out. :p:

If you come off the switch, without looking at the wiring diagram, I'm going to say yes, it would work.

Of course, you now make me state that if you are going to ghetto rig brake light wiring instead of just getting the right switch and connector that are out there, I'm not going to respond anymore. :)

 :DI was just asking for info , its more that I was curious than anything.
So what is that ,just a hot going through a switch to the lights?
I need to find a wiring diagram to see where and how it meets up with the turn siginal....
Speaking of ghetto , I need to fix my heater hose,it goes from the pump to the manifold...in a v shape :doah:.I need some kind of 90* for the manifold.

Are you putting a 3rd brakelight on a K5?

Yes....why? :smirk:
Just wondering.
I have one in my tool box that came off a 98 S-10 Blazer that I was thinking about installing on my K5, just can't stand the thought of having to drill through my fiberglass top to run the wires.

Basically, you have a power wire that comes into the brake light switch, on mine it is orange. Then you have a white wire that leaves the brake light switch and goes directly to the turn signal switch. The turn signal switch either passes the signal straight to the lights (no turn signal) or uses the flasher to flash the lights when signalling. I don't quite understand the whole flasher relay setup, but I am working on it.

Edit: You can use this link to get to some of the wiring diagrams, that should help a bit. http://brochures.slosh.com/

Mine is right above the tailgate handle. Which can always be Bondo`ed in or welded even.
I figure that low is about where idiot women on the cell phone or
putting make-up on in the mirror , is there eye level ya know?
Every little bit helps , I cant stand the though of my trucks rear getting smashed in/up. :(

Have ya gotta pic of that?

I had a kid hit my hitch, went right through his radiator. Not a scratch on my truck.
