I'm doing a headgasket for a girl I used to work for. I got out in the fridged weather today to start on it. I got alot of the top of the motor torn down. I went to pull that final bitch the manifolds off and was faced with possibly one of the biggest design flaws I've ever seen... I'm trying to get to the bolts below the intake manifold that hold on the exhaust and intake manifold. They use a stupid large cone washer to pinch the exhaust flange and intake down in one shot. The only problem is I cant get in there with a socket because the runners are in the way. Theres no room to turn a wrench on it and I cant go in from underneath because theres all 4wd, swaybars, and steering in the way.

Does anyone have a trick for removing these?

You could just pull the head with both manifolds still attached and remove them once it's off. Of course you will need help as it will be heavy.

Remove front clip, front suspension, interior, all wiring, doors, steering column....pour a gallon of gas on the pile and warm up. ;)

both replyes are super good.

but 4x4high has it correctly.

the other would only work with ford's = turd's

I had to do my XJ which has the 4.0,its a MoFo. I never was able to torque anything to spec for obvious reasons. Considering the failure/replacement rate of 4.0 exhaust manifords theres gotta be a special tool or something easier to use and I know its not pulling the head.
Might try posting up at the jeep forum or NAXJA and ask for tips.

Those guys smell...

Supposedly the swivel socket is where its at for this task.

Well I finally got started with this the other day and buttoned it up today. Took my way to long to do do to the cold and lack of daylight. Anyway Could anyone with a similar year cherokee take some pictures of underhood for me for vacuum purposes? Specifically that stupid vacuum block and the side of the TB.

YOU should have either marked those vacuum hoses before removing them or took a pic before removing them. :deal:

He should have, but didn't .

I just looked at mine.

Of the four I found (it was cold and snowing...didn't stay out to long)

One went to the PCV, it was behind the throttle body.
One went to the MAP sensor, also behind the throttle body.
One went to the fuel presure regualtor, this one was infront of the throttle body
One went over to the driverside fender and down below the headlight, I'm assuming a vacuum canister or emisions can/fuel vapor can.

FWIW: They are all plastic lines with rubber ends. If yours is the same way, it should be self explanitory.

Its an 89. I have the vacuum diagram and yes I know I didnt label anything at first then that light dinged in my head. Thats why the rods, plug wires, and every other bolt was tagged and bagged.

The funny part is that the vacuum diagram has about 6 lines on it but theres definitely more on the truck... My dilemma right now is that the MAP sensor line broke. Upon trying to fix and reconnect it I'm noticing two ports in the TB yet the diagram only shows 1 vacuum line....
