Ok well I was forced to resign from my job so I'm beat for work until after the holidays at the least. I've been trying to pick up some side jobs and was given the opportunity to do a head gasket on a 4.0 jeep. $200 for a days work sounds pretty decent vs the old 9.15 I was making. So either way I know what I'm doing with everything except the valve lash.

I know I need to keep the push rods in order etc. A friend of mine told me that the chrysler products had non adjustable lash, is this true? Am I just gonna set it to a torque spec or is a feelers guage spec between the arm and the rod?

If its a late model 4.0 you better have a look at the casting numbers just back of center drivers side of the head by the edge of where the valve cover sits. If it says 0331 better start looking for a new head, their notorious for cracking. Rgearding the valve last I never tore down a 4.0 but the 360 and 318 are non adjustable. When and if the head is milled the valve stems are cut to match to keep things in spec. If I recall my old 289 was the same way.

Make sure you get the head milled, and find out why the head gasket blew in the first place.

The valves are non-adjustable, just torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. and move on.

That makes this much easier. Believe me the girl I'm doing this for is not the kind of person thats gonna take that head to the machine shop. I'm telling her I'll do it but if its still ****d when i'm done its cause the head cracked.

Rocker arm bolts 21 ft lbs, cyl head bolts in 4 steps: 22, 45, 45, 110 ft lbs in proper sequence. Intake/exhaust manifold bolts 25-30 ft lbs, valve cover 115 in lbs or 9 ft lbs.

head bolts are 12pt american socket. and some have stud built in to them so you will need a deep 12pt american socket. and might want to get a impact grade not a chrome . the bolts come out hard at times.

also check the exaust manifold for the comon ypipe cracks. perfect time to swap it out for new at time of work. and comon back bolt breaks in head for exaust to head hold down. easy to get out tho.

I agree, don't waste your time if the head isn't getting checked out.

The head bolt size is 1/2 inch, 12 point. And if it's like the 4 banger, the front left bolt only gets torqued 100 pounds because that one gets sealer on the threads. Also, the thermostat housing can crack near the lower bolt if it was overheated.
