I've been having trouble with my 6.2 diesel. Put a new mechanical lift pump. It died on the way to work Friday.

So this a.m. I changed the rubber section at the pump. Of course it lost it's prime.

I remember reading here some time ago someone used their other ride as a vacuum pump.

So I contemplated on it and came up with this rig...

hooked up to the Jeeps manifold vacuum...

Used my mini vac to keep any diesel from being sucked into the jeep...

still was a pita even using the vacuum. I hope this fixes whatever is ailing it....

I've bled brakes and clutches that way...use vise-grips as an on-off switch to control the vacuum...:D..

I thought you suspected an ignition switch problem?....you can jump the fuel shut off direct to the battery if thats a possibility...

Those "push on" fuel filters often suck air at the o-ring fittings..might be a good time to ditch it?..

the filter is 2 weeks old...

I changed out the rubber sections of fuel line, the were factory for all I know. I suspected the fuel supply was the simplest problem, as well as the easiest to fix.

If it still had a problem the next step would have been to check out the electrical. It also had constant voltage to the IP solenoid regardless of me wiggling the steering wheel and manipulating the turn signal arm.

Had it running good yesterday evening, took it out on the road earlier this morning. With the new pump and fuel line it ran the best since I've had it.

I also did a half ass IP & injector cleaning. The tank was down to 1/8th full. I put a whole bottle of the Diesel Kleen (40 gals worth) in the tank and added $20 worth of fuel in the tank. Once I got it running yesterday I ran it for about a 1/2 a hour, varying the rpm's. Added $40 this a.m., and as I stated earlier it's running better than ever.

Hopefully that'll cure it for good!...I hate it when a vehicle craps out on the road, and does it again later on,it makes for anxiety every time you drive it after its "fixed"..your always waiting for it to happen again..

I've read you can bleed the whole diesel fuel system by removing the return line at the injector pump and applying vacuum there..never tried it myself--
I have an electric fuel pump near the tank I added to my '82 and it still has the factory lift pump intact, the electric one acts as a booster..

When I ran the truck out of fuel a few times,I was able to fire it up again after adding fuel to the tank by pinching off the rubber fuel line going to the injector pump with vise grips, then I opened up the bleeder on top of the fuel filter (I have the spin on one)--and I turned the key on and let the electric pump run until a steady stream of fuel came out there--then took off the vise grips and tried starting it--it took some cranking, but it finally fired up and bled itself fully before the batteries wore down too much..

Oh yes, it will have an electric pump in the very near future..:waytogo:
