So I came across a nice parts truck for $300.
The guy claims it has 4.10 gears and that you can tell by the type of tie rod that was on it. And sure enough his is different than mine and i have the 3.73's or 3.55's, not exactly sure. But a friend of mine has an 88 k5 with way lower gears than i do (and its stock) and he has the same tie rod on his truck as the parts blazer. So is this true? Because im pretty excited right now.

But either way i have a badass rear cage now. =]

Well you knowwww, never know. figured if it had a tow package in it or something that they would put lower gears in it.

I saw a front end rebuild kit, was the ball joints, tie rod ends etc, in a parts magazine that was for all axles except ones with 4.10 gears. I think it was norther auto parts.

Yea see! what the hell? Autozone couldnt find the right tie rod parts for my buddies truck, then one of the older guys asked if it had 4.10's

Why would it be different is what I'm wondering.

I remember something like that from the moog book when I worked at the parts store too, however the federal mogul website didnt show any difference in anything.

Well once i have it down at my dads shop i'll compare mine to the donor truck and post some pics! yayyy!
It must just be one of the GM mysteries, like the narrow rear axles.

I remember seeing listing in the moog book that said "all EXCEPT 4.10 ratio" also...what the difference was I cant tell you though..never had one of each side by side to compare--maybe one had different taper on the steering knuckle or some other stupid difference?..

I know GM used a few differnt styles of tie rods, depending on the year. Long one/adjuster/short one, short/long adjuster/short. Some had holes in the long one for the steering stabilizer. Depending on the year the taper in the knuckle was either up or down. So, know this, and knowing how GM could have changed things just because they had extra parts left over...it's possible that 4.10's could have gotten their own tie rod. Were 4.10's ever offered in a 1/2ton? What about a 10b?

hmmmm...i'm glad all my stuff is there on my 3/4t 10b if something is different...may be a pita if i need parts if this is true, i'd like to see this answered...the people seeing footnotes to exclude 4.10 axles in parts books has me curious
