I think these were all aftermarket or dealer conversions. They add an overdrive unit that replaces the tail housing and either put the overdrive on the column and the reverse is now a lever under the dash or they use the lever for the o/d but they all started as 3 on the tree.

I did a little research on these just last week as I am in the midst of rebuilding an old Impala and we are leaving the 3 speed transmission because we don't want to switch to buckets or notch the bench to install a 4 speed.

However the transmission shop said that Mercedes and some other import did have a 4 on the tree.

The lever did look a little crude, so I could see it being 60's after market or dealer.

Thinking on it a bit, 4 on the tree wouldn't be hard.

I don't see that setup winning a lot of races lol looks like it shifts slower than a sm465 lol

Still kinda neat I'll give it that. Kinda one of those,"if you can figure out how to move it, you can drive it" deals

My friend's dad had an old Sabb wagon (2 cycle!) that had a 4 on the tree!..
I drove it once...to back up,you had to pull outward on the shifter, and put it in "second",that was reverse!...

Never seen a 4 on the tree in any american car...3 speed with overdrive,yes..

I'm confused. Since reverse seems to be moved to the second lever underneath the dash, the column shifter still has 4 positions, just like any "normal" 3-on-the-tree, right?

Having a third axis on the column would be neat... (5-on-the-tree, anyone?)
