I have a 1980 blazer with 4wd, but its exclusively been a street vehicle and hasnt been in 4 wheel drive in about 15 years. Any maintenance i should do before i use the 4wd?

Do you have more info on the truck...

What t-case does the truck have?

Manual or auto hubs?

What kind of condition was the vehicle kept in, did the PO maintain it?

Have you moved the shift lever, does it move in/out of the gears?

I would definitely drain and refill the ATF in the transfer case.... Also your ujoints are bound to be bad on the front axle. make sure and check your front driveshaft for play (side to side) where the splines are.

If that truck is truly a 80, it will have a 205 and locking hubs. That drivetrain may have been sitting almost still the whole time. Pull the front cover and check the gears for rust. I had to sand mine with emery cloth, I couln't get the them to turn. Then fill with oil and check all the U joints in the axleshafts and driveshafts like everyone mentioned. I'd also engage the hubs afterwards but leave the shifter in 2wd and listen for and squeaks or other noises. If its all good, then go for it.

The truck is in great condition. I knew the previous owner personally and he never worked the truck hard, and he said the last time he engaged the 4x4 was about 15 years ago. A few months ago for ****s and giggles I slipped it into 4wd on asphalt, it worked fine for about 30 feet and then I heard a NASTY grinding noise and stopped

Manual or auto hubs? Were you turning or going in a straight line?

Maybe front drive shaft or axle shaft u-joints been sitting in one position too long. Obviously just a guess but definitely a place to start looking.
