Im lookin to replace the 305. It sucks, both gas and no power and low end clunks and i just hate it. A guy i know who is big into fixin trucks, like he has done everything from the 383 stroker in his cj to cummins, to wreckers. He has a 400 sbc that he said is all ready to go together that he could sell me. I had told him i was looking around the $900 range for something. Would my 700R4 be able to support this?? Also my rear end and such??? Im not doing axle swaps or tranny swaps, ima get an engine but i dont wanna get one thats too much for what i got. What ya think??

Never been a fan of the 400s. There is a reason hot rodders and racers dont use them and stick with 350s, parts are everywhere.

I thought that a small block was a small block, just different bores and cranks and cam??? And im not a hot rodder or anything, idk i was just wondering, correct me if im wrong lol.

ya just make sure you stuff is in good shape. and use your head drivin.

make sure you get the harmonic balencer and flexplate for the 400 sbc.

and i had a good light built 400 sbc in a 1ton with 38" tires. i was real happy with it.

and fyi some say yucky on 400 sbc run to hot. no thay dont. thay do run a little hotter. mine always did 200-210 on the temp gauge no matter the conditions or fan shroud or no shroud of flex fan or stright fan. thay just run little warmer.

but if i had another one i would take it. :thumb:

400 = bigger bore and longer stroke.

dont run away from it. thay are a miss under stood engine. only made from 70-80 if i recall correctly . and not many around compared to 350 blocks.

I love my 400 sbc, good torque at the bottom end and lots of hp at top end... If built properly, they are awesome engines and a lot of engine builders love them :dunno: Do your homework, there are specific parts/pieces that do not interchange between all sbc's (externally balanced vs. internal, steam holes in block/heads, etc.)

ahh ok its a 400 40 over, so 408. He told me 900 fully built with rebuilt stock heads and no intake. Its at the machine shop at the moment.
6 weeks prolly omg im so excited!!! haha :thumb:

I've also heard people say 350's make the most power of all SBC. There are alot of mis informed peole out there.

The biggest downfall for the SBC 400 is the siamesed cylinder walls which make them run hotter than any other SBC, and they tend to crack horizontally in the lifter valley area. I can't count how many i've magnafluxed that were cracked there. Also the harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate are specific for the SBC 400 ONLY.

Well he said its getting machined now and will be fully built ready to drop in. Ill just have to get a bigger radiator :D

You also need to make sure that the flexplate has the proper torque convertor holes for your torque convertor, not all flexplates have both bolt patterns.

Ok yah anything else i will need to ask/check/change let me know. And they are magnafluxing it and everything so he said it will be all good to go. He is a cool dude, and one of my best buds neighbors so I know him and know ill be getting something good.

Heres a video of his jeep with the 383 stroker he just put in last summer.
Idk if the link will work or not.

I feel like dancing lol. This week just completely turned around. I got dumped last friday, but now things are turning around finally lol. :thumb:

HAHA YES!!!! I am going to dance all over the sand dunes, and then do it again untill i blow my tranny!!!! lol, i so excited.

what compression ratio and what cam is going in it? find out before he builds it. no sense buying a new motor if it's not right for you.

and......anyone know how much you can safetly bore out a 400?

ummmm, not around here. Seem to be a Hot item localy (no pun intended)

I ran one for two years while I lived in Phoenix durring the summers in a 77 Chevy pick up and it didnt over heat.
it was one hot SOB outside but engine temp wasnt a big issue

one of my favorites was a 400 in a 90 TBI blazer
