400 sbc

as far as trannys, i was really thinking about doin a manual swap unless i can find a reasonable 400. how hard is it to swap a 465 in place of a 700r? what is the best combo/year to get for an 87?

The difference between all auto and manual 2wd and 4wd transmissions is rear output shaft length.

You can use any transmission you'd like behind a 400sbc. Any will work, and basically any of them can handle the power that nearly any modified 400sbc can put out.

How's that?:D

id stay away from the th350 cant hold up to the big wheels and power from a 400sbc. i had performance trans build me a th350 with a shift kit and it only lasted bout a 1.5 years. just not built for that. TH400 or sm465 is the only way to go, if your building a serious wheeler in my opinion. some say that the 700r4's will hold up if built properly, but in my opinion a serious wheeler wouldnt stick that in his rig. my .02

I just swapped a sm465 in my blazer this spring. i bought a complete 78 pickup that had the trans and everything. it will all bolt right in. you have to drill in the floor for the clutch setup, you have to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and you have to drill new holes for the crossmember. pretty simple though. makes it nice if you have the other truck to reference all the holes and such off of. (also the 78 had the np205 that i wanted too!)

PS side note i cant make it to york this weekend. probly next week evening or next weekend (ill call you ahead of time)

thats another thing. i think i deff. want to use a 205 t-case. i heard nothing but good about them. i dont really like 700r's that much. parts and stuff are really expensive. i wouldnt even think about using a 350 either.. seems too much like a car tranny to me. so its goina be between a 465 and a th400. most likely will be a 465 as long as i can find the parts, or like you said, a whole truck. there was a member on here with all the parts for the swap and was selling the stuff for 500 bux, which is pretty reasonable. but i want to get the motor all-but ready before i spend money on the drivetrain. btw, what did you pay for your parts truck?

got it for 350.00 delievered. but that was a crazy deal. my buddy used to work for earl & jacks junkyard and right before they closed he brought it home on the roll back for me. 500.00 not a bad price at all. if your not in a hurry i would just keep an eye out in the paper and locator/craigs list. something will turn up.
