400 small block

Ok, so the 400 is junk, gonna stick with the 350. What should I do to get good power out of it? I've been working on four bangers for so long I forgot what V8s like to make power! The truck is my daily, and sees weekly mud.

Still running a carb?

.435-.45" lift cam, alum intake and good heads if you can afford it. Shoot for 9.5:1
Run dual exhaust and step it up to 2.5" just before the muffler or run a single 3"

Yeah, it's got a Quadrajet sitting on it, and it's already got a true dual with Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers. If I change the cam, will I have to re-jet? Can you even rejet a Quadrajet?

Depends where you want to have the peak torque.

More lift/duration will move the power curve higher and you will decrease torque but increase hp. I've had excellent results with those numbers making peak at highway cruise speeds

As for the qjet, they are actually an excellent carb when set up correctly.

I don't want to change the torque converter, the only wheeling I do is mud, and I do hit the pits pretty hard! Well, as hard as I can with open diffs, and 33 inch all terrains.

Spending the time to make the distributor and carb right is everything for you. Make that effort, it will work great

Just did a tune up last week, found 1 split boot, and one boot (cylinder 6) that was half missing. Used ACDelco double platinum plugs, need to get a timing light to optimize, but she runs strong now. Also deleted the air pump when I changed the alternator belt. I tuned the adjustment screws on the carb the best I could, doesn't bog after the engine warms up anymore.

A cam should make 30 or so more hp, If you are a mud dude I think the largest cam for a stock converter is 268h or an xe262h both will wake that thing up..

Should put me in the 330 range, plus the long tube headers I plan on adding. I love having a rig that is no longer required to be emissions compliant! Not that they do emissions where I live.
