ummm. dont quite get the post, but if ya wanna keep it in first, put ur shifter in low 1. welcome to ck5
I think some of the more advanced shift kits, Such as B&M's Transpack, have the modification to allow the tranny to stay in first as long as the shifter is there. My brother has my TH400 book, so I will check later to see if there are any Modifications listed there.
TH400's will automatically upshift from 1st even if the shifter is held there.

my old corvette was like that
put the shifter in 1st and stomp the gas and at about 5500 rpm (60mph)
it would bark the rear tires and shift to 2nd
I dunno, dumb guess...unhook the vacuum modulator. Might eliminate all upshifts.
Your tranny is shifting on the govener. Dont disconect the vavume modulator. It will show the trany zero vacume, just like WOT. You will need to modify the govener. You can modify the weights and change springs. I think you want lighter. Some people use a govener from a corvet.
If you realy want to control shifts how about a manual valvebody? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
You can modify the governor to raise the upshift points, but it will raise them under all driving conditions and all gear selector positions.
It's gonna take valve body modifications to make it a manual/auto valve body. Call B&M or even Summit Racing. They should have something to help you out.
A shift kit will give you total control.
Some shift kits will give you full control. Some won't. You have to check. Some don't do anything more than firm up the shifts. Summit lists a Transgo automatic/manual kit for the 400 for about $75.
