I installed the transmission on my 83 k5. It was recently rebuilt. I filled it up with fluid and when I start the truck it leaks a lot of tranny oil from the top of the dipstick. It is not overfilled and was wondering what else may cause this? It does this everytime I start it but then stops after it's poured about 1/2 bottle of fluid. Thanks for your help!

Did you fill the trans with the engine running. The only way you get a true reading on the dipstick is if the engine is running.

Yes the engine was running for about 15-20 minutes. It has done this for about 6-8 times already. once for every different day. I have not droven it yet. Had to finish fixing the rear and other things but I would turn it on just to keep the battery from draining. Everytime I would start it up it would leak like crazy from the top of the dipstick.

Do you remember how many quarts of fluid you put in the trans when you filled it up? If you filled the trans with the engine running I would check the breather on top of the trans to make sure that it is now clogged.

Check the vent. And maybe try shifting through all the gears, to get any trapped air pockets out.
Good luck
