Been adjusting my linkage to get the shifts in the right place on the gated shifter. The threads on the shaft coming out of the trans that the linkage conects to are stripped.

Anything I should know about taking that shaft out?

Looks like there is a hex head on the shaft nearest the trans, Do I just put a wrench on it and take it out or what is it connected to on the inside of the trans. Guess I never paid much attention when I have had the pan off.

I did give you a link.
Not sure if it right

I'm also more hillbilly than you, I'd probably burn it on

Could get a die a re-thread the shaft--may have to file it smaller and use the next size down (if it's 3/8,use a 5/16" die as an example).
Another fix that may work is a shaft collar, but that will not tighten up against the lever,it'll just keep it from coming off..

It also may be possible to weld a piece of threaded rod to the shaft and use washers--but the seal in the trans case will probably melt from the welding heat..

I’ve never been in a 400, but on the other ones that shaft is installed from the inside out. The valve body might be in the way from removing also

If it’s only the shifter and filter, you’re golden. Pulling the valve body would be a bit of a bigger mess

Inside the pan the shifter shaft is attached to a “rooster comb” detent plate with a nut. There is a #4 finishing nail holding the shaft into the case, pull it out and remove the shaft, but check for burrs on the nut threads.....also change the case seal while you have it out and dont gouge the case taking the old shaft out.
