hello ,iv,e found an engine and the guy says it,s a 427, the engine number on the back of the engine is 396985532 and on the rightside it says C10 70 is this engine build in the 10 th month of 1970 then ?? and is it an 427 ?? it has a double termostat is it and has the mark truck on it:dunno:

That casting # dont show up in my book on "How To Rebuild Your BBC",but that doesn't mean its not a 427...a tall deck truck 427 has 4 rings on the pistons, the crank for a 427 differs from other BBC engines,if the pan is off look at the 3rd counterweight from the front of the engine--if its 7/8" wide its a 427,if its 7/16" its a 396..but the 396 ct 402 cranks can be swapped in if they are re-balanced,so thats not a 100% gaurantee either!..

There should be a engine ID cose up front, either just in front of the passenger side head,or on a small "pad" behind the water pump, with 3 digits..like "ATD" or something sililar--some other numbers there are the vehicle VIN (or part of it anyway)....unfortunately the 427 tall deck morors are very hard to identify sometimes, the 366's look exactly the same externally!...sometimes the only sure way to tell is to pull off a head and measure the bore & stroke....if you find any other ID numbers post them here and I'll see if my book lists them..

it's a HD tall deck motor out of a dump truck or school bus. They made 366's and 427's. Drag racers like em because you can run a longer rod and put a regular 454 piston in them. It really helps the "squish." Regular BBC intakes won't fit, but most aftermarket companies make intakes to fit them. The spacer kits work, but not well unless you get the expensive one, and by that time, you coulda just bought a tall deck intake to begin with.

id love to have a 427TD,those motors can push high torque and high hp easily,my buddy was going to build one up for his truck but they are heavy so he didnt want a boat anchor up front of a short wheelbased truck. guys get them to 540cubes with some machining. its a keeper!

Thought I had mine sold....Wanted to build a monster out of it, but any money I put into it, I can put in the Cummins and spank almost any big block...

Big blocks are only 150# heavier than a small block. I had a 454 in a short box and rode fine. Actually better in every way than the small block it replaced. More power, better sound, better gas mileage, etc....

wel i did found the code on the back and it is 39698552 and on the right is says C10 70, on the front of the engine near the cilinderhead stands T10417 TMC,it has two termostatats in it !! the guy says the pistons have four rings , has four bolt mains and the engine is 0.30 over thats al i could find:dunno:.

I'd ask to take the oil pan off and have a look at everything. You could then get a good look at the condition of the engine, and probably could measure the bore size.

Dave

"TMC" is the engine code, but all the tall block codes in my book begin with "A"s ,it probably dont list all the codes though, only covers some years...a junkyard that has a Hollander Interchange manual will be able to look up the code,or a GM dealer parts counterman maybe..but I would agree looking at it with the pan off is a good idea--too many 4 bolt main motots end up NOT being one once the sale is done!...and you can measure the bore & stroke and see if any scoring exists in the cylinders...sounds like it was a rebuilt already, being .030 over..that means your limited to how far it can be bored further..

Forgot I have a bunch of casting numbers for tall decks. Are you sure its 552 and not 553??

Every one I've ever seen or heard had 'em.....Usually why they take the cranks out of them, least the 366s...

I have a list of tall deck numbers, a 553 is on there but not 552. But Kansas found it to be a 366. I wouldn't get it inless you really need a motor bad. It will work, they are still torque monsters, but that is about it.

The 366's were very good long lived engines, that get dissed for no good reason, other than being the "dinkiest" big block ..with their 4 ring pistons, long stroke and 4 bolt mains you can get a lot of mileage from one,I've seen many busses and C-60's that got junked and they had 200+K on them, still ran sweet...they have real thick walled cylinders and can be bored .125 over according to my BBC rebuild book...but they aren't the most sought after BBC chevy,so often they either get sold cheap or scrapped...I wouldn't mind having one in a K-5 or a pickup, they look identical to a 454 and not many guys know the difference...

i think i,m getting old, and need glasses , the correct engine code is 3969852, it seems to be a , 1970, 366, 235 hp engine, how much torq does this engine have with what rpm,s and whats the max rpm it can run ??
thanks for the support guys thisfar.

and what about parts for this engine ??? cams ,intakes ,heads or isn,t it worth it ?? the guy is asking 1500 $ for it, complete with headers, carb, ingnition. i think prices here are higher than in th US .

Standard BBC stuff works, except for intake manifold (can be made to work with a spacer kit), pushrods, connecting rods, and pistons. I'm not sure if the distributor is the same or not, but most aftermarket companies make a dizzy with adjustable collar that will work. Here in my part of the US a 366 is about a $300 motor on a good day, unless you need one real bad, then you can't find one for less than $1000. If you get one, you'll have to switch it over to light duty accessories, meaning water pump, alt, ac, and ps, which is more $$$.

I had one in a short school bus once; it wasn't a speed demon by any description, but what can you expect out of a 15K lb bus?
