ok i have a complete 454...i have a 366t crank that =427 in 454 block or for the price of the 496 crank i could build it...what would you build

let me start off by saying the 496 clearancing bothers me and i've always loved the way the 427 revs,

so, 427 pistons/454 pistons/496 pistons & the respective rebuild...its a mud/street truck so nothing radical 268 comp extreme energy cam/aluminum intake...while looking at parts i realized i was buying or reconing everything needed for the 496 except the crank...so why not try it? i've seen afew/496's of them fail..and 454's that seem to live forever so, which is a better choice to go w/this engine? i've always heard 1hp/per 1 cid isnt a stretch...

of course i would like to hear 4x4high respond as he's built 496's and know what/how to clearance the block..& i want to here from you other 496 builders 2

Doesnt the 496 require a new set of pistons? You would be adding 1/4 of an inch more stroke and the pin in the piston needs to be moved up... correct?

I hear all the time that 427s rev this and that. I had a 468 that revved pretty friggin quick and would go to 7k no problem. It might not have been super special, cast crank, small rods, 2 bolt main, but did the job without complaints.

If it's a car, then go for the 427, but a truck needs torque, go with a '54 or the '96.

Sell the 366 crank to some racer and buy the stroker crank or put it towards a rebuild.

There is no subsitute for cubic inches. I would build the 496. There is very minimal clearancing required IF you use aftermarket rods. I have no idea what is required though if you use a factory rod.

Build the 496 for real power, but tell everyone it's a 427 so you can brag about having a "classic" motor.

:usaflag:

i already want to say it is a 402 .030 over.. =)... see i wasn't planning on new rods..wanted to recon them.....buy new pistons, cam, intake, rebuild kit/gaskets/seals...so i think it may stay a 454... i have to get a std flywheel also & plan on balancing it, my machine shop wants flywheel to dampener to balance, not just piston/rods/crank...

before i scratch the 496, wheres the deals on the crank & aftermarket rods? lets see how much more it would cost...

572...................... done.

personally, i have an unholy affection for the 427, its just a magical number to me. Id run a 427 just for bragging rights.

427. Bring the old school. Plus this may be incorrect but I believe less stroke = more top end HP which would be good for mud.

I'm quite happy with my 496 except for the cost.
That 69 pickup I raced against in the end has a high compression 598 running on alcohol and my 9.8 compression 496 on nitrous is just as fast.

496 hands down.

or keep it 454 theres no way I would destroke it to 427 .

comparing a 427 passenger car motor to a 454 truck engine ( which all the 427 guys seem to do) is ridiculous . or the guys who compare a 327 to a 400 ( again not fair cuz the 400 was smogged choked)

its like comparing the DZ302 to smog era 350. its not a fair comparison.

Build a 496 if you can afford it you'll love it.
If not build the 454 as a 454 with good pistons and rod bolts

You make power in the cam and heads and theres no replacement for displacement so spend accordingly

496 definately, I would never willingly give up displacement in a truck application.........heck I dont think I would do it in a racecar....

reason i asked is b/c this is a weekend side by side mud dragster, and i've seen bbc's desroked from 454 to 326 cid for drag cars and i wondered if stroke really played that much difference....i think i'm going w/k.i.s.s. notion/just try to build it a 454 that lives like the enegizer bunny...

Eh lots of guys go 355 over a 383 small block wise. I would say this is the same comparison.

Bore vrs stroke is all about what kinda curve you want. For a truck torque always wins...

not if i get the rpm where the tires will skip along the top sorta like those buggy's crossing the water

edit: i guess i'd need tq to get it relying on rpm's

You might want to check out the bbc forum at www.clubhotrod.com. Great site and Pat is the resident guru on the bb. For a mudder I would still go solid roller 496.
Tons of torque + light weight = skip

yeh but a 355 is just a .030 over 350 same crank, he is talking destroking a 454 b/c thats the crank he has vs buying a new crank to maintain or increase his CI. With the price of parts today, by the time you paid a machine shop to turn an old crank down (assuming it needed it) you are within a $1-200 of a stroker crank (stock cast vs aftermarket cast not forged)
