454 Cam Kit options?

Any specific reasons?

Just trying to build a good knowledge of the cam differences to make the best choice. Only wanna tear into it once.

Well I think those heads (small oval shape)are about the worst ones put on a BBC, experts can chime in to confirm this or correct me if wrong. The peanut port (large oval shape) are great for all but high rpm engines. I believe your engine would have those small ovals, and therefore a little more duration and lift should help more with the 454 cubes. I don't think I'd go any more duration than 220 @ .050 for a towing engine though.

Better yet, call comp cams tech line, they'll ask you exactly what your equipment is, any mods, and your usage etc. and get the right cam the first time.

OK, so would a head/cam combo optimize the cubes even more. I want to get the most out of the BBC in keeping with the Towing dept.

I'll let the BBC guys chime in on the best towing combo...Maybe some Vortec 454 heads would be the ticket.

I done a couple of cam changes in my big block that im running in an 82 blazer,i first went with the 280comp cam kit , i had the small oval port heads on it with a 750 double pumper and edelbrock rpm intake, it sounded awsome and flew ! but as a tow rig you should probably go for a 270 4x4 extreme which i am now running with rectangle port heads torqer intake and 750 double pumper. It is popular belief that the rectangle port heads have no use on a heavy truck. From experence i disagree !my truck does see some off road action only in sand as you can see were i live, but man this truck moves!I have low end torqe not as much as the small ovals but its there ! i also have a set of 781 heads which are sopisidly awsome .

Peanut ports are the small ones and are great for towing and daily driving. Regular oval ports will work great unless you want to spin it 7500rpm consistantly. Probably not your goal in a truck. If you have peanut ports and want to improve upon them, find some #781 or #049 castings. We've flowed #781s against several other castings and they are better all the way through.
