Really if it pulls from say 1500 to 5000 or so Ill be real happy![]()
I have pretty well the same build as the Car Craft article. My cam is the 262 (one notch down from the 268 used in the article). With the 262 it pulls hard from idle up to 4500. Above 4500 it's still strong, but you can sense it's maxed out. That's ok, since I rarely go over 4500 anyways. My combo is K30/454/Th400/NP205/4.11/39.5" TSL's. Great in mud and snow and dd. In 4low using 2nd gear it pulls hard all the time for my wheeling terrain, I never need more. For rock crawling you'd need more gearing than I have.
I run the stock 1975 pistons, and get a low compression ratio. However, the good thing is I can run regular fuel. I have a few friends who need to run premium fuel, and they often complain how much more it costs to fill their gas tanks. Their performance isn't that much greater and they say if they'd do it again, they'd build an engine that could run regular fuel like mine.
I've read good headers will give you the best bang for you buck for some extray power from the 454. I run stock manifolds, but do consider changing to headers from time to time.
With the Quadrajet it runs great summer or winter, daily driver, not finicky at all. Great setup. I love my setup and would do it again.
Codytr1, what terrain type is your wheeling in?
