Can anyone tell me excactly where to find the code numbers on my 454? I looked up my VIN and my Jimmy came with a 350, but was swapped out with a 454 2 owners ago so I have no idea what year it is. I know it's carbureted so most 454 parts will fit. I'm adding headers and an intake manifold, but don't know if it's oval or rectangle ports.

You'd need head casting numbers, believe those will be under the valve covers.

If the engine is complete (pretty much impossible to know unless you are the original owner) the suffix code will tell you exactly what it is...year, model installed in, carburetor, HP, etc.

Since it is carbureted, will I need to know the excact year to order parts? So far everything I've put on it I've referenced a '73 454. Do I need the year to know if it's oval or rectangle port to order a manifold? I heard I can find out by taking the stock manifold off, but how?

Mmm. Gonna be easier, IMO, to take the valve covers off and get the numbers from them ... least, IIRC the numbers are under the covers.

http://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm

has the scoop on where to find them, what they mean, etc.

get the casting # off a head under valve cover. then get block casting # from bellhousing lip on left/driver side back of motor.

run both to know the heads and the block.

Square port heads are far and few between and were used on the early muscle cars and marine applications. This doesn't however mean that someone hasn't installed a set on your engine, like everyone already said pull the valve cover and get the casting numbers and look it up on www.mortec.com

Thanks for the tips and web sites to everyone. I'm guessing it's gonna be easier to pull the valve cover off then to try and look at the rear of the block with it in the truck. The biggest problem is having the truck at my dads house where I can't go to everyday. It runs, but he has the space and tools to work on it. If I ever figure it out I'll let everyone know.
