454 losing oil pressure

I’ve got a Melling performance pump (standard volume), Melling pickup and a oil pan gasket in my summit cart. I’m going to call them tomorrow AM to make sure they can ship it tomorrow so I’ll have it Thursday for our camping trip this weekend.

probably ship it from Sparks NV, You could get it on thurs. no local parts stores machine shop.

usually yes but the last few months they’ve been shipping 2-5 days after I place an order and the parts come from Texas.

I agree with a new pump. But also it seems that your pump is probably fine. You seemingly found the problem with the pickup and stuff in the pan.

Don't ruin your trip and better safe then sorry. But if you pull your pump apart. I bet a cleaning would deem is usable.

I have had several items come from Texas and Ohio or on 4 week back order. You don't know until after you have ordered. I would call them.

I thought about welding the existing pump/pickup however I hear penetration would be an issue with the oil saturation.

I should know right away if it’s fixed or not.

Properly cleaned up, you would be ok.
Dawn dish soap. Weld. Reoil to prevent flash rust.

Felpro makes a nice 1 pc oil pan gasket that would make an in truck repair easier, I believe it’s in their Performance product line.

Something to think about, the trash made it through to the filter so it’s possible some could still be in the runners between the pump and filter.

Fwiw, I’ve run several 454’s in my trucks starting in ‘87, every one has had a Melling high volume pump. I’ve used regular truck pans, 1 ton truck pans and a Canton pan - I have never had an issue with cavitation and always had good pressure. My current 454 has a high volume pump.

I’ll end up swapping the oil and filter again sooner than later for that reason.

The gen 6 I’m building right now has a higher end one piece rubber/metal gasket from fel pro. Not sure if they’re the same or not but it sounds similar.

Similar gaskets but they should be different because of the 1 pc vs 2 pc rear main. I have one on mine, much easier to install than the multi piece kits.

When ordering something from Summit Racing, click pickup at your closest store to see if it is immediately available for pickup at that store. If it is, it will ship from there next or same day. I've been doing this for years, works every time. :waytogo:

it normally does work like that but it hasn’t the past few months. Covid BS.....these items say they can be picked up today in sparks but I’ll call to confirm.

Did it suck that gasket in or was the debris in the filter old

Is it possible to solder the pickup tube to the pump? Or braze it?
