Does anybody have manauls for a 454 engine ?
It's inside my 1981 Suburban.
I am trying to figure out some things, it would be much easier if i would have a manual for the engine.

One of the things is the vacuum valve that is on the left side of the engine. (looking from the front)
Bottom of the valve has a rod that goes to the exhaust on the same side. There seems to be a mechanical valve in between the
exhaust manifold and the actual exhaust pipe.
The valve is no longer connected to anything, and the mechanical valve at the exhaust manifold seems to be stuck, but would be interesting
to figure out what is / was.

Another thing i am wondering, does the 454 engine come standard with a Quadrajet carburetor ?
On the carb. there also seem to be some hoses missing. (Engine runs good, as far as i can tell) It would be nice if i could figure out more about the
carburetor by a manual....

Many thanks,

Marcel

It is know as a butterfly valve and is vacuum controlled. It is closed until the engine reached operating temp,
then is open by vacuum.

Hello, Thank you for this.

Mine is stuck (exhaust side) , and there is no vacuum hose connected to the valve anymore.
I guess doesn't effect the normal driving operations.

A service manual for the 454 block would still help me a lot to figure out about the engine...

I want to try to get as much back to original as possible.

If anybody has something, would help me a lot.

Thanks.

The 454 doesn't have it's own service manual, and the EFE (Early Fuel Evaporation) valve would be covered under Emissions. The previously link manuals in the cruise control thread ? has all the service manuals available. You can buy them on ebay sometimes, Helm was/is GM's publisher, but only goes back to 2019 on Blazer manuals. Only to 88 on Suburban, and then only has owners manual available.
The EFE valve closes on start up to force the passenger side exhaust back through the intake under the carb, to help open the choke faster. Normal maintenance requires rust penetrate be sprayed into shaft regularly.
Your valve is probably rusted in position, hopefully in the open position.
The vacuum signal is controlled by a TVS (Thermal Vacuum Switch). This switch, normally in the cooling system water jacket near the thermostat, is normally open allowing full manifold vacuum to the vacuum actuator at the EFE valve. As the engine get to the set temperature the TVS closes cutting off vacuum to the actuator opening the EFE valve.
If you were to full throttle while the TVS was still open and the EFE valve closed, the lack of manifold vacuum would allow the EFE valve to open, maintaining performance.
2 issues are common. The passage in the intake can plug up not allowing exhaust to flow through to the drivers side exhaust. The approved repair is to remove the intake and chisel the carbon out. You can imagine how many people just disconnect the EFE actuator instead. After a period of time they will rust in a fix position. I disabled mine, remove the valve and the cross shaft and plugged the holes. Later when I had the exhaust redone I eliminated the housing. This was done to eliminate the minor restriction it causes on the right side.

Hello,

thanks for the reply.

I did find information in the manual(s), you are correct.

However, i was hoping that there would be a specific manual for the 454 engine, in full detail.
If there is no such manual, only way is to deal with the manuals provided in the other post.

Many thanks once again, also for your detailed description regarding the valve etc.
