454 small block

Anybody run one of these 454 small blocks? Do they hold up? It is a 454 and it is custom with a 4.250 bore and it is a small block. I don't think it was from a stock 400 block though. Read about it today in a performance book.

I don't think it was any production block. Probably after market. You can buy "new" smallblocks now in finished and unfinished(bore it later) stages, darn near any bore size that will fit. Of course the cylinder walls are siamesed. World Products, Keith Black and Rodeck come to mind. Cost an arm and a leg though. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Im pretty sure its a World castings block. I would think you would want a really good cooling system to keep things in check.. but other than that i couldn't see a problem with them. last week on horspower tv they built a 472 smallblock with a 4.1" bore and a 4.125" stroke. Used a GM tall deck bowtie block i beleive. Made something retarded like 685 hp and 633 lb ft on pump gas.

There is no such thing as a 427 SBC. 427 is a BBC.

SBCs are 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, and 400.
 
i saw one of those in a magazine. That thing would be insane. I think you were right on the castings being done by World engines. It would be kinda cool to put that thing in a really light muscle car. It would be one heck of a sleeper.

That would be the Merlin World Products Sportsman 2 block you are thinking of. Bored to 4.250" with a 4" stroke. Doesn't impress me much...I would just build a good ol' 454 BBC for much less if I wanted that many cubes. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif
 
actually I have done quite a bit of research on big inch small blocks and they are awesome but costly, the biggest crank you can run in a production 350 block is 3.800",(if you want it to last) and thats with splayed caps and lots of block filler to keep the core/web from twisting. The machine work alone make's it not doable for the average Joe. But with a production 400 block you can run a 3.800 crank with splayed caps and it will be fairly dependable without filler and all the extra bullshit. But if your going to spin it up to more than 5,000 rpm it wont last to long before it twists the main web and your done.So if your set on building a monster small block that will "last" you'll have to spend around 1800.00 for an after market block. OR use a 400 and dont twist it up to more than 5000 and be sure it's a good block done by a GOOD stroker machinist. But for the 5000.00 it will cost to do this with the 400 to make it a 415 or 420 you have many other options to choose from using a big block. I did all the math and all the research for the cheapest "QUALITY" parts, via Ebay and other discount places and spoke with numerous machinists to do just this, and found that I couldn't do it right for less than 5000.00 as a long block with all new fasteners and quality parts heads etc. and this is not with a forged crank but a good Scat series 9000 if you want forged it'll be another 5 bills! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif
 
You can get a 454 SBC by boring a factory 400 SBC .060" oversize to make the bore size 4.185" diameter and stroking it to 4.125"
