If your actually ever going to wheel it and come to any sort of incline, yes a TBI will be a nice benifit to have. Sure some carbs are for off road use, but you just can't beat a basic tbi for not flooding float bowles sinse they don't have them :D. There is a reason it's THE goto desired setup for reliability and dependability for off roading. Carbs are for drag racing :haha:

decided to go roller cam, either stock vortec or the mercruiser magnum cam. gonna be carbed till I can get my hands on stuff to tune proms.

anybody ever run solid rollers on a hydraulic roller camshaft?

If you plan on going to tbi in the future, you will need to have a tbi compatable cam, or be prepared to swap in one when you switch over

do you guys have a favorite hydraulic roller for the tbi 454?

I decided on going roller because I have seen way too many flat lobes lately. I have personally had lobes flatten with every possible precaution taken.

I am not going for huge power, just want a good solid big block without worrying about the cam. I can only afford to do this once, and roller seems like the way to go.

I agree with the roller cam. I would use a hydraulic roller lifter, not a mechanical lifter. I'd scrap the idea of a carb and TBI and use a Vortec 454 intake MPFI system. A few tweaks with a 93 ~ 95 TBI PCM and everything else bolts on to the older 454 heads.

I would like to use the vortec fi set up, because they seem to do better on fuel, but I already have all the tbi stuff rounded up.

There is a complete 8.1 with harness and computer locally, price isnt much more than I will have into this 454 project. very tempting.

You can use a mech roller on a hydralic but you need to have like .004-.006 lash to make it work. You are never really going to need the advanatge of a solid at the rpms you are going to use that motor.

the reason I asked about the solids on the hydraulic roller was that I can get a slightly used set for pretty cheap. After reading about solid roller lifter failures in street use I decided against it.

I put new rollers lifters in my camaro before leaving for drag week. If you drive it alot you would need to get good at checking lash so you can find the lifters that are getting bad before they wreck your day. They are alot better than they were but spring pressure and maintenance are your best friends.

Sell the 454 engine and TBI stuff and go with the 8.1!:waytogo:

If you need assistance with the 8.1 liter wiring and a computer with a custom chip for the 8.1 liter send me a PM.:dunno:

what do you guys think of this cam? tbi friendly?

I know comp sells several rollers that are tbi friendly, just trying to save a little money. I am new to big block stuff, how much lift is possible without a lot of headache.

Some CK5 board members know I can tune TBI PROM Chips and Flash the newer LSx PCM's with custom programming. Based soley on my personal experience, including dozens of TBI PROM chips I've programmed, I say "There is no such thing as a TBI Friendly camshaft"! Based soley on the dozens of chips I've reprogrammed, anything but a factory stock camshaft will need chip reprogramming. Other might disagree, but I ask anyone that does disagree, that they post data logs to prove the TBI Friendly camshaft they personally installed did not require chip reprogramming!

thanks for the replies

I guess what I meant to ask is if that cam is easily within the tuneability of the tbi system.

If no changes are made to the PROM chip, the cam you have selected will be rich at lower engine loads, and lean at higher engine loads. In general I recommend installing a better in-tank fuel pump for the 454 TBI. The better in-tank fuel pump will keep enough fuel going to the engine when the engine load is high. I recommend a steady 15 PSI fuel pressure, or maybe a vacuum adjustable fuel pressure regulator if the fuel table gets weird in the chip tunning process. Yes, the cam you selected can be tuned for a TBI.

Here is a pic from the tuning software (histogram) on how the cam selected will typically run, without chip reprogramming. 20 Kpa is light engine load, 100 Kpa is heavy engine load.

Well, I finally have most of the parts together for the swap. I am using a stock vortec 454 cam.

The headers that I have are 1 3/4 with round ports, and the head ports are square. do they make a header to match these heads (781)?

the only other question I have is I got an 88 454 th400 prom from a 7747 computer, will this use the esc system like the 350 does now?

I think I could better answer this question if I knew the Broadcast Code (BCC) of the PROM chip you have. I've seen several 454 BBC's that Do Not use a knock sensor.
