Pull and save....
Greetings,

New member here, long time lurker. I've found a wealth of information on here without ever having to post but here it is. The original vehicle is a 1986 k1500 high sierra suburban with a vin "L" 350, sm465, np205 ( I think), 10bolt (grenaded finally!). I'm looking to do the following:
  1. I found a 78' c20 longbed donor pickup with a 454. Is there anything special I will need other than possibly a *flywheel* to bolt this thing up to my current tranny/t-case combo. I plan on swapping the 14bolt FF into the rear with a conversion joint and hopefully just bolt the 454 right up to the sm465 bell housing eventually.
  2. I have a hydraulic clutch currently so I'm curious about clearance issues others have experienced.
  3. I would also like to use the radiator and the entire front clip from the 78 if possible.
Thanks for any response. I have been able to find pieces of the information I'm looking for but maybe I'm missing some entire tech thread on 454's swaps.

-Scott

WTB 454 flywheel from an externally balanced bb. Any front rangers of colorado have one collecting dust?

I suppose I'll have to make a build thread....this is going to be quite a project. Just picked up the 8 lug 15" rims for the 3/4 ton conversion along with the front axle parts to make the 8 lug swap while I hunt a dana 60 down.

Pictures and thread incoming.

I have done a bit more research and found out a few things.

-The 454 should be a direct bolt in to my sm465 and motor mounts.
-With a $16 balance plate from Jegs I can run the flywheel from my 350.

Pictures incoming this weekend possibly!

I more or less pulled my 350 and dropped it in. Some simple changes but mostly a bolt in. I prefer a weighted flywheel, pretty cheap at the parts store.

The cheapest flywheel I could find was 172 from the parts store.....unless I'm missing something. Any advice helps! For now I'll run the balance plate I suppose.

Cool good luck !!! I am prepping my 454 right now. I have a 350 auto trans but other than that should be the same

I couldn't find any hardcore evidence that it will, but I have seen a few posts where people have run a lightweight 350 flywheel with that balance plate on a 454. I'm not sure it's going to work but I'll find out soon enough. I did however find the 75$ flywheel on jegs which I'll probably get if this doesn't work.

A sbc flexplate/flywheel bolts right up but a 454 is internally balanced and except a 400 sbc all other motors are internal. The 400 and 454 are different weights. I sware I bought one from car quest for 85-90 bucks but I am in bfe. The problem with a balance plate in my mind its it changes the flywheel distance inside the bell housing. Actually have a 454 flywheel rusting in the back of a truck right now be I think we live too far apart.

Update on the flywheel issue....Turns out I have a 1 piece rear main 350 so the flywheel will definitely NOT work with the 454. Ordered up my new Jegs performance flywheel, hopefully it will be here Tues or Wed.

Long time no updates....I've been busy finishing up details but the truck is up and running with the 454. Runs like a champ. I'll post some pictures over on my build thread.
