Hi guys. Currently I run a 454 bored .060, oval heads, with a eldebrock intake and carb. I have an oppertunity to get a complete running 454 with harness and computer, guy said whatever I needed, and he's asking 650 for the whole bit. First of all is that a good deal? Secondly I was wondering if the TBI system would swap over to my current engine or if I would be better off just running the tbi engine? I have no idea what my cam profile is on my current motor. Would I just be better off putting in a decent cam into the '88 suburban motor? Would my oval heads work with the TBI? What about my fuel system... I know I would have to run an electric pump now, what about return lines and a fuel pressure regulator? Any help would be appreciated. I've searched around and theres a lot on the 350 tbi's but not so much on the 7.4's. Same idea for the most part? Also are the exhaust manifolds the same? The donor is coming from an 88 2wd burban. The computer doesnt "talk" to the transmission at all does it? Im running a T350 now and would probably just keep that. Oh I get the 2wd tranny with the deal as well. Thanks!

I'll try to answer some of your questions.
650 for a good running 454 and complete TBI is a good deal.
Yes the TBI should swap over to your 454. 88 TBI just used an adapter plate on a carb manifold to mount the TB on. If you still have a spread bore manifold you can just swap the adapter plate to your intake. The rest of the sensors should swap over. Check your bolck and manifold to make sure you have the threaded holes in the right places to mount the Coolant temp, Knock, sensor and oil presue switch, ECT.
You will need to use the TBI dist.
Exhaust is the same
The only thing the computer controls on the trans is torque convertor lock up. That should cause you no problems.
By oval heads do you mean large oval or peanut port heads?
Beings it is a carb engine. You will need the cam profile to get a custom chip burned for the ECM. Espically if you have Large Oval heads. It will flow way more than the stock chip can handle.
You will need to run a return line back to your tank.
TBI has its own regulator you dont need an aftermarket one.
You will run into a problem because you dont have a VSS. The ECM needs to have a siginal from VSS or it will throw a code and can affect how the engine runs. You can get a custom chip programed to ignore VSS.

The cheapest and easiest route would be to use the 88 454 and put a computer frendly cam in. It would also be great if you could get the gas tank and the fuel/return lines and fuel pump, wireing, Speedo and VSS unit from the donor vehicle.

Yep rob the harness and easiest would be just to use that engine that has the TBI if it is in good shape. You could always sell your engine for some money.

Howell is a good resource for TBI swaps. The techs helped me with what I needed on my 350 to 350TBI swap with a 350 turbo.
