'73 454 mostly stock but has been rebuilt. TH400 rebuilt with about 1000 miles on it. with GM-3 torque converter.

hot at idle oil pressure varies between 6-12psi goes up to 40psi on acceleration. is that low of a pressure normal?

Normal operating temp. for the motor? Mine went up to 235F today at 80deg. ambiant temp. sitting at traffic lights.

then like every other day the engine does not idle and will die if you don't keep feeding it gas. the next day everything is fine. really strange.

Now for the tranny. A squeal develops (like a loose belt) as soon as the truck warms up and is loudest when coasting to a stop. Will still squeal while sitting at idle at light. Goes away on a steady accelaration. And disappears entirely after a good 30 minutes on the freeway. I have isolated it from the water/pump/belts/power steering by taking off the belts for a few seconds the noise goes away. while underneith it is loudest at the Torque converter but I suppose it could be in the motor. The noise was not there before getting the tranny rebuilt. The shop that rebuilt it could not hear anything as the noise went away from driving the 30 minutes to his shop.

Also occasionly the tranny does not shift into 2nd right away when cold.

What do you all think. Gremlins?

for the engine its probably your carb and or timing the trany if its making a squeel then something inside is rubbing on something it shouldn't and I say make them rebuild it again for free because it would be their falt sorry I couldn't be more helpful

I've got a remanned 454 with less than 1000 miles on it, and my oil pressure reads between 15-20 consistently. Never over 30 psi.
Seems low to me too, but I am not convinced my gauge is correct either.
I'd be curious to know what the average is.
