I asked this in my build thread but though I might get more response here. When the install happens I will post lots of pics and information in the build thread.

I'm having the 454 Vortec rebuilt with an RV cam. It will be bored .030 with new pistons. The stock injectors look like they have had better days so I want to replace them. The stock injectors are 19#, one hole. An upgrade is 19#, four hole. And also 24#, four hole. All are Bosch injectors but reviews say to stay away from the Bosch brand. Why is this?

I'm going to ask @Team208Motorsports to work on the wiring harness if it is necessary, and do a tune if it can be worked out.

What injectors would you recommend?

Are the Vortec injectors on those "standard" injectors, and not the poppet junk (IMO) that the early Vortecs were known and sometimes despised for?

The Ford stuff generally has seemed quite popular. Mine are the old "SVO" injectors, the newer ones I think have smaller bodies.

There are calculators out there to figure out the duty cycle, but you have to know a few things to get a decent calculation. You don't want to go too big, but if the 19's are on the upper end, 24's are probably not going to cause problems. You can go too big, but I don't think that is an issue with the 24's. I'm sure my 350 doesn't need as much fuel as your 454. :)

Both of my 454 Vortec motors are 1999 so I'm not sure if they are the poppet type. I've seen the 19's, 4 hole in the large body......and the 24's, 4 hole in both the large and small body. They are all from Bosch and a lot of reviews say to stay away from that brand.

The 454 Vortec being built right now is getting an RV cam for more torque and is going into the K5. The other 454 Vortec I'm not sure what I'm going to do with. I may have it rebuilt for HP and drop it into a 1978 Trans am. But that is way on down the road. I may just sell it and use the funds for the K5. Too many things to get done before BB17 and not enough time for 2 motors.

I haven't heard much about Bosch injectors. Years back now there was a lot of talk about how poor Bosch O2 sensors were, at least for GM products, but I suspect that may have been resolved by Bosch.

Bosch is a huge company, and is OEM for some components, so it's not like their stuff SHOULD be junk.

I think Ford's stuff has their name on it, did last time I looked. Have to admit, haven't really looked at injector "reviews" lately, but I don't recall ever hearing anything bad about them...I have for GM, at least the earlier Multec(?) injectors.

i think it was just 4.3 and 305/350 vortecs that got the spider / poppet injector unit .

but i have not seen or worked on many 454 vortec engines my self.

Waiting on reply from @Team208Motorsports to get their input, also, whether to go OEM or upgrade the injectors. They've been very busy.

I tried to find the reviews I was talking about, on the Bosch injectors, but not having any luck. It's been a while ago.

It will be at least another 2 weeks before I get my motor back from the rebuild so there's no hurry. I just want to have them in hand when I go to install it in the K5. I will do a huge write up, with pics, on the install so it can help anyone else wanting to do this.

I just got done putting in a 454 Vortec swap into my K5 I had team 208 Motorsports rewire the harness to do a performance tune on the computer easy swap highly recommend team208Motorsports if I was to do it again I would get some aftermarket headers as I problems with the exhaust hitting the frame I ended up having to notch out the frame a little bit it wasn't much probably less than 1/2 inch

Did you do a write up on the swap? I'd like to get more information on the installation if you have the time. I would like to have Team208Motorsports do the harness and tune but they haven't been on here since June 18th and I haven't heard back from them on the request. I'll continue to wait, I just hope it's not too much longer. I called their number and left a message a week ago. Hopefully soon.

You must be patient. Team208 is often on the road lots. It took a couple months if I remember right to get my harness and tune done. Worth the wait though....try hitting them up on Facebook.

I didn't do a write up on my swap but it was pretty straightforward.

@Magikal........Where did you mount the PCM?

I just got the 454 vortec wiring harness out of the truck.....WOW that thing is huge.

I'm going to wait for Team208Motorsports to do the harness and computer tuning. I want to get it done right. I'm getting ready to rebuild the 4l80e now but that won't keep me busy for too long. Ordering all the parts for the tranny swap to mate up to the NP241.

What will provide the signal to the 454 PCM? The 4l80e is a 2WD so the speed sensor is in the transmission, not the transfer case? What speedometer will I be able to use. Right now I am using a speed sensor that mounts to the side of the transfer case. It goes to an electric speedometer, then to the ECM. I know there is an input and output sensor on the side of the 4l80e but not sure what I need to do to make it work in the K5.

Tons of question needing tons of answers/links. Thanks

When your harness returns from Team208motorsports there are about a half dozen loose wires hanging free. One of them is for the speedometer and should work with almost any electronic speedometer.

I mounted the pcm on driver's side fender. Robbed the mount from the donor truck. Worked great.

Be sure and get the right output shaft for the tranny. There are three different styles. Personally, I doubled up a 700r4/208 adapter and cut off about 5/8" of the output shaft and just used the 2wd tranny.

This it the style I bought. The existing 2WD shaft doesn't have the splines all the way down or I could have cut off what I didn't need.

I got the mounting bracket for the PCM and for the fuse box.

Do I need to use the shift cable from the column of the parts truck? I'm guessing I also need both cables to the throttle body?

I use the existing shifter cable and connect mine to a Hurst pistol grip shifter. As for the throttle cable I scavenge the junkyard and found one from newer rig I believe it was a Chevy Envoy. The second cable I believe was for the cruise control which I don't use.

@Magikal......OK, you lost me on this one.

I thought if I get the 4WD output shaft, the adapter goes on the end of the tranny, then the transfer case. Are you saying that you still use the tail shaft housing? Do you have a pic of this set up, I can't find anything showing that the tail shaft housing is being used. Forgive me for asking but this is clear as mud at this moment.

Pic of my setup to use the 2wd tranny. Only had to cut off 5/8 off the shaft
