461 double hump small block Chevy heads

They're high compression (62cc), so you could probably get some decent performance out of them, but they have no holes for accessory mounting. They also don't originally have hardened valve seats, so you'd have to get some installed to use with unleaded gas.

With the advent of good and relatively inexpensive aftermarket and Vortec heads, you're often better passing on the old heads these days.

like ^^^ said, they are worth somthing to someone, usually a restorer these days. for what it costs to rebuild those heads you can get better heads for near the same cost, and be able to bolt accesories to them.

depends on what you want the vehicle to do, really.. you'll be happier with them if you are sure to get a cam with a profile that matches, and are prepared to live within those limitations.

I have a set on my 69 camaro ( 331 small block w/ ARP studs throughout, HEI w/ MSD box, TH350, 3:73 posi). the shop that did the machine work on my block had the set..they were bare, so I sprang for the 3 angle valve job, hardened seats, springs, port/ polish etc..I even topped them off with a set of roller tip rockers..all told, they cost me about 500.00 back in 1988.

then came the engineering fun of mounting an alternator without accessory holes.

At the time, I thought it was cool to have such "vintage" parts on the car, but as time has gone on, I've come to view those heads as more of a power robbing liability.

When I was putting the car together,I was torn between doing a restoration, and the fact that I wanted to go from stoplight to stoplight.. quickly..the first incarnation of the car featured a built powerglide, and 4:88 gears.. that was fun.. later on, I went to the TH350, 3:73's, and changed the cam to put the power band where I wanted it.. fact was, I discovered it was fun to take something I assembled myself on long road trips.. if I was smart, I would have really put more thought into what I would do with the car, and selected the right parts first..

I've had it dynoed, and the car is putting down 253 RWHP, 264RWTQ..

I'm happy with the cam, cause the power comes on from 2500 RPM on to 4,000 RPM, which is where I like it - I don't drag race the car, I take it on the freeway ( turning 4 grand all day long) and collect as many rock chips as I can..

anyway, I'm convinced that there's more power to be had, so when I'm done with some other projects, I'm going to go with a set of world products iron heads..I want the thing to breathe better at the higher rpms..

to me, the double hump heads are like bias ply tires.. they were good in their day, but technology has left them behind...if you go with a set of vortecs, or world product heads,( for example) you'll have a basis for getting the most out of any other mods you make.
