I just got my 77 running...and it's one of the greatest feelings in the world. :D embarrassing part was the first time I actually got to drive it was around the school...:( wasn't running right.

I shifted out of 2nd into 3rd no problems and when I tried to downshift it wouldn't let me until I was almost stopped. No grinding or funny noises just wouldn't let me in gear.

Is there something I didn't plug in? I would think not since it an older tranny, or is 1st just not synchronized? I tried to double clutch but that didn't work either.

Whats up with it?

The shift pattern I'm referring to would be L-1-2-3 NOT 1-2-3-4

Thanks

1st is a "granny" gear which is very low. There is nothing wrong with the trans. I'd be surprised if you could ever get it into 1st gear by down shifting.

I didn't mean 1st to low, I meant 2nd to first or 3rd to second. However you say your shift pattern.

Basically the 2nd gear past low to the first gear past low.

There are only 4 (forward) gears in a SM465 and 1st gear is something like 6.05:1. Most people start out in 2nd gear because of how low 1st gear is. From what you're describing sounds like you're talking about shifting from 3rd to 2nd?

Yes 3rd to second. There is no point to startin in first gear, I let the clutch out and it's time to shift again.... haha

The "first" gear you're referring to is also pretty low at 3.58:1 so it's just not gonna be able to go into that gear on a downshift over about 8-10 mph. It's normal. With my SM 465 I never downshifted that far, I'd come back out of 'third' (according to shift knob) and downshift into 'second'...but if I was stopping I'd let the r's come down to a bit over idle, then pull it into nuetral. At a stop or just before I'd tuck it into 'first', but wouldn't let the clutch out like a true downshift.

Okay, I'll have to get used to that then.

I just had to slow down real quick, I hit a hole in the parking lot and it threw the truck all over the place. I had to slow down a bunch and tried to go in 3rd but it didn't want to...tried 2nd but wouldn't let me in....haha

Once I got it and rolled the clutch out, the truck walked sideways though....buncha kids looked I felt cool.:rolleyes:

I know what you are talking about. I had the same problem with my 465. It's better now than it used to be, I think its because of the high quality oil I'm running in it. It might also be the synchro wearing out. But It only does that when the trans is cold. Double clutching does help a little, and I am making it a habit to double clutch as I come to a stop and downshift into 2nd.

The granny low is not synchronized, the rest of the forward gears are.

Make sure the trans is full, a low transmission can be difficult to shift.

Otherwise, as said before, its just kinda hard to get into that gear when you're rolling. No need to downshift anyway IMO.

My 465 doesn't like to down shift into 2nd either. It usually goes in around 10mph or so if you let the clutch out a little. You just have to accept that a shifting a 465 will never be as easy as shifting a little ricer

I believe that is suppose to be a first gear lockout to stop you from inevitably grinding the trans. My toyota and my samurai both had it in first gear because the driveline was spinning too fast even for the syncros to catch up.

Since 2nd is really first gear at a normal driving rate this would make sense.

Yeah, no matter what it's gonna be tough. As Chevy305 mentioned, double clutching does actually help quite a bit to bump it in a little quicker than just pushing until you slow down enough. The only time it ever really freaked me out was trying to use the engine to slow me down on an icy hill. The 33's couldn't catch enough traction to slow the rig down and it wouldn't go into gear. I just kept slamming it until it popped in, but I thought I was gonna have a heart attack.:eek1::eek1::eek1:

You can also try revving the engine a little before going into 1st(not Low, but 1st) as this will help match ground speed with RPM's. Old farm trucks are finicky so you end up finding ways to drive them easier.:D

What are you running in terms of tranny oil? I just did a service and used plain old 90wt, but my pto covers are leaking cause I spaced on sealing the gaskets so I'll probably have to drain it again and refill before too long. I just read some of the threads on oil debates and thought about using redline or something this time around.

For your information, this transmission is the same one used in GMC school busses. Have you heard of double clutching? That is when shifting from 1 -2 to 3 ( or 3 - 2 - 1) you apply the clutch shift out of gear, while passing to neutral release the clutch fully, reapply the clutch and shift to the next gear and release the clutch. The sencronisers (?) are massive and takes time to line up. Also check your clutch adjustment, if it drags even slightly ( not fully dissinguaged) it would make 1 - 2 - 3 and 3 - 2 -1 shifts almost impossable. Low is not sencronised.

I knew that Low wasn't sychnoized, found that one out quick.:eek1:

I haven't adjusted the clutch "properly" I tightened the pushrod till it put tension on the fork, and went from there.

I was in a rush because I needed to get it on the trailer and get it to school so I could present it for my project.
