ok, for clarification, i'm referring to the gears in the following order:

the lowest gear = L
next up = 1
next = 2
next = 3.

ok, so when shifting from 1-2 and occasionally from 2-3 in a suburban i've been using for a few days now, the gears grind. if i push the shifter up toward 2 and leave it there for a second and then shift into the gear, it won't grind.
i don't have trouble getting into L, 1 or R, just the two i've mentioned.

This truck has a hydro clutch. syncros? thoughts?

If there is a problem it sounds like.....

Syncros, however, those just weren't made for speed shifting and it may be fine. The hesitation shift you describe is how they are meant to be shifted.

interesting. i have a 465 in my truck (83 blazer, but the tranny is from a 70's rig) and i can shift MUCH faster. i have a mechanical clutch, if that makes a difference.

Sounds like the synchro's are done, and your tranny was from a '77 K20.

Clutch in, into nuetral, clutch out, clutch in again and into the next gear. Tedious at best.

ok, that's a bummer. this is the church's tow rig and we tow all of our church stuff to a highschool every sunday for service so it needs to be operating smoothly.

what's the best next step? i was thinking that if the syncros were done it might be best for me to pick up another 4wd tranny/tcase set up and swap it in and then simply have this other one to fix at my leisure. is this a better idea than teaching myself how to rebuild a tranny and do the syncros?

gotchya. that would suck. glad it's not my truck! :wink1:

A used 465 shouldn't be too hard to find in most junkyards. Then swapping it would be easier and faster because you wouldn't have to take the old one out, tear it down and make a parts list, get the parts (cost and time frame) reassemble and re-install.

that's what i'm thinking too. a ck5er near me is selling one, i'm going to try to get that deal. :)

Don't throw the old one away. It's a good thing to know how to repair or rebuild one of these. It's just finding the parts that can be time consuming.

thanks for the tip on the rebuild manual. i'll keep it, rebuild it at my leisure and find something to do with it. :)
