so i swapped a 465 205 into my burb last week with a hydro clutch

it was making a weird noise, and have been trying to figure it out
its making a grinding / metal rotating around metal noise while driving, i thought it was the transfer case as my friend wasnt sure about it, so i put another 205 on it, the problem persists now, so i know its not that

when i was on the highway, i was trying to slow down, so like we all do, i just let my foot off the gas, so the engine and tranny would sort of downshift in a sense and slow me down... well right after i let my foot off the gas, i hear a noise from my nightmares... its the same gear grinding noise that you get if you try to jam the truck into low or reverse without using the clutch, just total griding, its ridickulous, i can hear somthing else like rotating on somthing else metal, nobody could figure it out

i spoke to another friend and he gave me an idea that i agree with
these are theories, correct me if im wrong
we think the reverse gear is a whole extra gear and kinda sits to the side in the tranny, and when you shift into it, a fork moves over grabs the reverse gear, and adds it into the gearset so that the whole deal moves backwards
we think that the fork or somthing has failed in some way, and is allowing the reverse gear to move over and kind of rotate next to the moving gears, which is making the noise of somthing spinning, we think the grinding is when the gears being to try and merge or what not, and we think its the reverse since it does it in all gears

i know its most likely impossible... but can i fix this? can i do it while its on the truck? can i get to it if i cut off my hump and take off the top? or thru the pto panels? or should i just give up and pick up another tranny? id rather not seeing as its a pain in the ass to swap those heavy cast things...

thanks, cory

Yes you can get to it from the top. a bunch of work, IMO.
If it was mine, I would just get another one. it's too easy to swap out and in, then trying to mess with tranny internals. even though, there really isn't a lot to a 465.

But, stop and rethink this. Are you 100 percent sure your diagnosis is correct? make sure that the trans is actually bad before replacing it. It may just be a clutch issue, or a throw out bearing issue. Diagnosis, is the name of this game...

all new bearings and such when i put this in last weekend, clutch went in without a problem, fairly certain that the throwout bearing is seated right

i dont think a throwout bearing issue can produce the problems im having

the sound is a gear grind sound, a hard one, the exact sound you hear when trying to go into low or reverse without hitting the clutch, no doubt in my mind about taht

also, i feel if it was throwout related, the sound would change, get better or worse when i hit the clutch and it does not change

i spoke to several friends and it looks like none of them have another 465 available, id like to fix it, i figure, if i mess up somthing, then ill go to a 3rd party seller and pick one up

whats involved in fixing this from the top of the tranny?

I would bet money that its the t-case or trans/t-case coupler sleeve. 205's can be very noisy if you have any driveline vibrations and they make that terrible gear-grinding noise.

If the coupler sleeve between the trans/t-case is worn it can cause noises like that too.

ah whoops, forgot to mention, the last truck this was in, the adapter was changed to a new one right before it was taken out, so the coupler is good, i also double checked it for play

but the nice grinding sound does get a little more apparent if its roughed around a little, bumps ect, like its floating around

just talked to another friend of mine, he had used the tranny and sold it to my friend who didnt use it, the tranny was in a shed open to outdoor conditions, there was a rag in the shifter but no oil in these, so im starting to think rust may be playing a role in this

My 205 has made the gear-grinding noise ever since I lifted it. In 2WD it will make the terrible noise on the highway, especially when your not using any throttle.

I've run it in 4WD with the rear shaft removed (front wheel drive) and the t-case was almost silent. That's because I had a CV shaft in the front which vibrated much less than the rear non-cv shaft.

IMO a CV rear shaft would solve your problems.

You are correct, the reverse gear is offset in the bottom and will "float" back and forth tapping the gears IF the fork is broken. Do you have reverse? If so then that isn't your problem.

I would bet maybe some synchros, how hard is it to shift? Is it only 3rd gear that It does it in?

i do have reverse, which is what makes me think it may not be that

38377k5 - is it the same sound i am describing? you can hear somthing spinning then off the trottle its the same gear jamming sound?

i had read that driveline could have somthing to do with it

but i had an identical lift and drivetrain combo in a k30 i had, transfer case wasnt dropped or anything

it was mint, made no noise whatsoever

should i start looking at my driveline before i swap trannies, IE drop my tcase and change my pinion?

I agree, I'm going with an 85% chance that its a bad angle on the drive shaft. As a little experiment see if you can put those spacers in between the frame and the trans cross member to lessen the angle slightly. If the sound dissapears or lessens then you know its driveline angles.

I have the same problem, I get this bad chattery noise on the highway too and it took me forever to diagnose it. Although the way you're describing it, my noise might not be quite as bad yours...

im gonna space the tcase tomorrow, weather permitting

the angle on my axle could be better, but i noticed that the grease in the ujoint attached to the tcase is doing the whole, heating up and kinda melting out thing, so im starting to lean twords driveline angle some more

ill let you guys know what happens...

i dropped my tcase today with some spacers that i had

the noise seems to have dissapated, but not dissapeared

allthough this gives me hope for the future since i still havent changed the angle on the pinon which is visibly poor

hoping this will help, i will post back up after to shim this puppy

thanks, cory
