I know that the 465 is supposed to be around 465 max ft-lb input torque, but in reality what kind of power are you guys running through your 465 and not breaking stuff. I am going to be doing some engine mods on my truck and will end up about the 465 ft-lb mark and am wondering if i need to start worrying about the 465

thanks

you will never break it. my bb is pushing some where in that ball park no issues.
a club member is running a 525 melin for 7 or more years no issues.

I think the cluth or something else will fail before the 465

I beat the snot out of a 465 with around 560hp, 535ft/lb. Never had an issue. I'm talking burning 38" Swampers. Just take your time with the long throw to 2nd gear.

I don't have a bb but I beat the living hell out of my 465 and that thing just takes it...

The numbers don't designate the maximum output torque or power. You can beat on any 465 all day long. Unless you can pony up the cash for an engine like a drag car or a monster truck have, you'll never fcuk up a 465 with a stock or mild engine.

the only thing i have broke on my 465 is the bell housing and the transfer case coupler.in which case the 465 tranny itself was not the problem.they can handle a ton of power with no real issues.i

I always figured that the 465 designated that is a 4 speed with a 6.5:1 first gear but I don't know that for sure.

For sure, the 465 won't be your weak link.

The only problem I have EVER had with a SM465 is popping out of 3rd gear and I have been told thats from a worn syncro gear.

I plan to go through mine someday, and replace worn parts.

EDIT: in the big truck world a trans is described by how many usable forward gears it has total the exception is 2 gears that are so close they may as well be the same. This includes LOW gears, an 18 speed for example can split every gear even the low gears.

with that said a SM465 IS a 4 speed with low first.

I also hate when people call them a 3 speed with granny low. Some people will argue that because there is no 1-2 syncro that 1 shouldnt be counted but going back to big trucks they do not have syncros for any gear. With that reasoning big trucks couldnt count any gear.

Didnt mean to write a novel.

thats what gm says it is, i've seen it on a gm manual described that way. & on the stock shifter knob also.

Many of us have seen it described this way, but regardless its a 4 speed transmission because it has 4 forward gears. Sure, most will start in 2nd gear on the street but that doesn't change the number of forward gears in the trans.

Its a 4 speed ;)

My most recent encounter with this type of nomenclature was calling to ask about a furd powerchoke...

Me: Is it a manual or auto?

Seller: manual

Me: 5 or 6 speed?

Seller: 5 speed

I go to look at the truck and sure enough its a 6 speed. I tell him, " thoought you said it was a 5 speed"

His response, "It is, also has a granny gear" :doah:

exactly I can start my semi in 5th gear when its empty but its still a 15 speed.

As for GM describing it as a 3 speed with low first............ well I call that kind of stuff the "idiot clause". They will also tell you that you cannot shift from L to 1 while moving. It doesnt have a syncro to make that shift smooth. But if you know how to match your speed and RPM its possible. But an idiot get in th truck and just tries to jam gears and damage is likely to result. Thus the "idiot clause" or covering their ass for when millions of idiots break stuff doing something they dont know how to do.

Good answer.... I wasn't trying to stir anything up, I just hate describing the trans that way. The first manual I learned to drive was in a dodge M-37, not sure if anything was sychronized. When o got my k-20 with a 465 it never really occured to me not to double clutch out of low gear

You can shift from L to 1, I do it all the time in my K30, because I have such high gears, I use L to start (3.73's with 36" tires). It is designed to shift from Low to First, otherwise what would even be the point of Low??? Down shifting from 1 to L is what you are not supposed to do, although I can and do.

I rarely ever use Low in my Suburban though, because I have 4.10's with 31" tires.

I didnt say you couldnt shift it. It was semi hypothetical/sarcastic but would apply to the SM420 a lot better. actually now that you bring it up I am stumped on wheather the 465 has a 1-2 syncro. But that wasnt the point of the post at any rate. But you are correct I should be more clear.

1st (the 6.55:1 gear) and reverse are unsynchronized, the rest are.
