It's an earlier 10spline sm465.

I took the top cover off, don't ask why.:doah: Now I put it all back together nad I can shift it into each gear with ease. BUT it will only spin in 1 (L) and 2, 3 4 and reverse all feel like it's locked up. And in neutral the tranny is still hooked together. (wont spin freely)

I took the top cover off again and everything *looks* correct, what am I doing wrong?

I'd be checking to make sure that you don't have two shift rails engaged at once.

Set all of the shift collars to their center position so you can roll each part of the transmission indepenantly, then set the shift rails all to center, reverse half way in, and drop it back on :)

Make sure you get all the forks onto their collars too. I bet you had the shift collar for 1st out of the fork. So when you think you put it in 1st, it already was. And when you think you take it out of 1st, it still is in 1st. Once you engage another gear, the tranny will lock. It can spin at two different speeds at once, so it won't spin at all when it's in two gears at the same time. IIRC, you're supposed to manually shift the tranny into reverse, perhaps, while reassembling. Do so with your hands on the collars, with the top cover off.

That ended up being my problem. haha, For the future you must put the cover back on it N and halfway through pop it into R opposite as taking it off.

Halfway into reverse...no other way for the shift collar/fork to line up right or get past the gear cluster on the main shaft.

Halfway, that's right. I knew it wasn't just as simple as one gear or another, didn't sound quite right. Anyway, glad you got it back together.
