So I went off roading with my son today, and a few times on pretty rough bumpy two tracks, when i was in second (third counting L), if the drivetrain was not under any acceleration or deceleration load, the jiggling shifter would pull it into neutral.

Is this sorta normal, or is something haywire? It's a pretty heavy shift knob on a long lever, I can see why it shaking so hard could cause it, but I haz a concern.

Well, thing is, it's not really popping out. It's like when you try to slide the gears without clutching, you coast it then ease it out of gear. It's just doing it by itself when the shifter is shaking around so badly. Never does it on the street.

Factory shift knob? Also curious if you are getting a lot of shake on the shifter, rocking back and forth?

Yes, factory knob. And yes a LOT of shaking. When it's side to side it doesn't happen, but sometimes it's back and forth then it can pull it out of gear.

I have gotten to where i ride along with my hand on the shifter to calm the shaking, but that gets old quick.

Not worried about your knob then.

Somebody smarter than me might have another idea. Kinda sticks in my mind it might be one of those I mentioned

I'll keep it in mind too, but I sure hope not. lol.

The shift lever flying around a lot can be a wore out shift-lever, retaining spring, and shift lever cap not being held in by the wore out roll pins on the trans shift tower. Since the trans is not forcing it self out of gear while under load, this means it is not a bad synchro. The flying shift lever itself may be taking it out of gear. Not being under a load is when you probably relax and take your hand off the shifter, and this is when it pops out of gear.

I had a SM465 on a 2-wheel truck once, and I had to replace the shift lever because it was wore out on the square tip end of it where it seats into the shift forks. I also replaced the shift lever spring, which goes under the shift lever cap, because it was sacked out like an old DANA-60 king pin spring. Also, I replaced the roll pins that the shift lever cap compresses down on to and locks the cap in place to the shift tower. Replacing all the parts made my shift lever stand straight up like it is supposed to.

Thanks, that's exactly what sounds like is the problem. Would the spring be an LMC type part?

A transmission parts supply store is where I got my SM465 parts from. This was along time ago before the internet. I do not know how old you are, but "back in the day" Hot Rod and Off Road Magazines used to have about 4 to 5 pages in the back with a bunch of small advertisements, and this is where I would go to buy a lot of my performance stuff. This was before Jegs and Summit.

There you go. Hey, I just noticed you are in Las Vegas too.

Yeah! I just drove Mormon Well Road today for the second time. We should meet up sometime. I actually live in Henderson, across the street from the ValleyAutomall.

Is that the one out of Red Rock, then ends on on HWY 160 / Blue Diamond road, or is that the one near Black Mountain? My place is completley the other side of town in Summerlin, but my Shop where I keep my trucks is more centraly located. Until I get one of my rigs going I have nothing to wheel with. Mormon Well Road is out your direction. It goes from the 95, up past Kyle Canyon, heading north east over the mountains to the 93. Opposite direction from Charleston.

I know where you are talking about now. I went wheeling on that road once about 10-years ago with a friend of mine that owns a pretty sweet 1979 Bronco (351 Cleveland, C6 trans, 205 transfer case, 4" lift, 33" tires), which he bought brand new in 1979.
