My 84 model 3/4 ton 4X4 feed truck is having several issues and I'm thinking of changing to an automatic. Basically the pedal mounting bracket, linkage, and especially the pivot ball for the throwout bearing all need replacing in a bad way. This truck has fed several hundred round bales of hay every winter since 1984 so the linkage stuff is well worn out. Enough of my rant, here's the questions.

What do I need to make the swap from manual to automatic?
Is a TH400 the way to go?
Planning on using a floor shifter on top of the tranny, NOT trying to do the column shift thing.

What should I expect to have to pay for a rebuilt auto?

Does the SM465 have any re-sell value?

Thanks

I would think it would be easier to replace the bracket, linkage, and ball than to swap out trannies.
Sure, you would avoid some hassel but create others.
First sourcing an automatic and transfer case. I don't think you'll find an auto that bolts to your existing transfer case. Also, you'll have to redo both driveshafts, possible buying different yokes at the t-case end of them.
Alot of these parts you can find salvage, but it takes some looking.

I would check with GM for the pivot ball. From what I remember you can change it and retain your bell housing.

Lastly, the durability of the SM465 is crazy. I seriously doubt you could have gone the 13 years with an auto trainny doing what you do.

Thanks for the help. Novaks page and hydraulic clutch setup looks like a good way to go. I've also run across a 89 model 1 ton, 4X4, 454 with a hay spear flatbed that I may consider buying instead of repairing my truck. I would gain fuel injection so probably the same mpg as my truck. Should the front axle in a 89 1 ton be a D60?
