these things are freakin rare! I can find them in there industrial configuration, but no used ones for use in automobiles. What gives?

4btswaps .com isn't listing any close to me.

Let me call my FIL he seems to think he who dies with the most tools, wins! I'll bet he's got one and I'll also bet he lets me use it.(even if I have to ask the MIL instead of him)

4bt Cummins Finds

I know they're a pnta to find. Just need to get some local classifieds and look for step vans. Plenty of places online for them too. I found mine when I quit looking, Imagine that. If you have the money try and find a 90's van they have an Allison in them. Found mine with a sm465 but I think the usualy have th400. I know Frito Lays sells them used also. Case Backhoes and skidsteers have a p-pumped 4bt in them also very cool. If you have an equipmnet auction place close you can find them for cheap. Saw a 580 backhoe sell for $1000 and the guy turned right around and sold it for $750 scrap after pulling the engine. Just need to get the chevy or dodge rear housing off ebay if you get an industrial. Should be able to get one with flywheel for couple hundred.

no OEM ever offered one in a mobile road vehicle off the production line. thats probably why you can't find one. the P30 step van ones, were retro-fits.

no big deal though, just get your hands on one and it'll go. one out of a forklift will shove your junk around just as good as one from a step van.

Factory option 4bt

Chevys Step vans came factory optioned with a 3.9 4bt since at least the mid 70's the new ones come with the new Allison trans. Mine was in a Grumman Penn body van. The vin proves in was factory. Check out www.4btswaps.com Alot of great info. Ford also has a 4bt option in the E350 vans.

I dunno what engine you're picturing, but the Cummins B series engine was not introduced until 1984 thought.

Your right about the B series 84. Frito did retro a lot of them. You can find them all over online. Ups uses them also. Not sure what year they became factory opioned but you can get them now. Like i said before you can even get them in an e350 now. In Argentina you can get a f-350 with a 3.9 ISB. That might be a bit pricey to ahold of though.
