So last night I bought a '96 S10 ZR2 with 117k on it and second gear is out on this little guy. First, 3rd, OD and reverse all work just fine. Just second gear is out. IIRC second is controled by the band around the drum right? Could I just replace that band with a high energy one? I've seen a 700r4 apart a few times now but I have never done it myself. Is this a simple repair or am I looking at getting a new transmission or a complete rebuild or what? Thanks.

It could be something as simple as the 2nd exhaust hole plug. Which is very near the pan rail and is easily covered by the gasket. Or it could be the selinoid.(or however you spell it). With the pan off you can air check the 2nd band to make sure it is applying. Use the 2nd exhuast hole near one of the pan bolts below the servo on the right side. left side if you looking at it from below.

Ok, that kinda makes sense. I thought it was wierd that I had 4th but not 2nd. I pick the truck up on friday. I'll look into it this weekend. I had visions of tearing into the trans and replacing bands and the sunshell. It would be cool if thats all it was.

This is mine during the first stages of teardown and before cleaning. This is just to clarify what I'm talking about.

Check trouble codes. OBD2 has codes for tranny problems. Could be just your 2-3 solenoid. I think that is a common problem with them. Easy fix just drop the pan and replace the solenoid.

I have a code reader, and the check light is on, so that will be the first thing I do is check the codes. The PO told me he that the light was on for the transmission and an O2 sensor problem. I got the truck real cheap and again, that would be excellent if all I was doing was dropping the pan and doing one of these simple repairs. I know the solenoids are fairly inexpensive. I've been told by some one else as well that may be all it is was a solenoid problem. I bought the thing for 1450 and its pretty clean for a rust belt truck. It would make the deal even sweeter if all I had to do was change the solenoids, filter, oil and clean the valve body to get second gear back.

It wouldn't be the band as it also is used for OD. It could be a shift solenoid, a leaking accumulator or servo. I'll bet the code will give you a clue, solenoid would be the most likely. Check codes and let us know.

my 96 4l60e did the same thing....had to get up speed and jump 2nd into 3rd,then it would shift into od just fine and drive on....after a couple weeks limping it like that, i lost everygear, but only at operating temp...when its cold, it pulls, when it gets warm i have nothing...i'm about to pull the pan and see what i find,...a locally tranny guy told me that my torque converter is coming apart and probally had sent metal all thru it and i'll probally need a full rebuild,..then qouted me $1200, if i pull it! wish i knew more about trannys, i'd build it myself!

Yeah, you can see it apply through a window next to the valve body. But only use about 40-50 psi. 2nd and 4th both use the same servo assembly but have completely different fluid circuits. I hope for you all the problem is just a solenoid. The codes will tell you alot.

mine threw a code....idk the #,iirc ..it was 815 or 816,maybe 861(it was an 800 #) but it said ''manufactures transmission control module''...nobody seems to know what it is and/or they haven't ever heard of such a code, not even the local gm stealership.. :dunno:

Are you sure it is a 3 digit DTC? There is a DTC 82 which = "transmission 1-2 shift solenoid circuit" And DTC 81 = "transmission 2-3 shift solenoid circuit. And finally DTC 84 = "transmission 3-2 control solenoid circuit".
