Ive had my 99 silverado sitting in my yard for the last 2 months the transmission took a dive. well I figured might as well get it driveable b4 the snow hits. Ive heard that all 4l60es from 97 on up are the same talking full size trucks. I have a 99 silverado 4wd with a 5.3. thanks for any info.

I have heard the BB versions are a little different how I don't know but when I has mine rebuilt that was an asked question. The earlier models had the lines in a different spot that I do know.

lol I read 4l80E not 60 so Im not sure I would think it should work. Although 98 was the last year for some stuff, not sure on the tranny fit things though.

yea idk Im gonna call a local transmission shop tommarrow and see if they know anything.

I would try to get one for the same year, but a good yard would have proper interchange info.

I know there was some changes with the case, removable belhousing, etc in the late 90's

i found out the torque converter and flyweel are different the pilot hole is different bunch of other stuff 2 it can work but involves swapping parts from one tranny to the other. sucks trying to find one of the same year no luck all the junk yards around me dont have anything that new.

The 99 is the first in a new body style. With the body style, came the 5.3L motor. Shoot for a 99+ 4l60e, that was mated to a 4.8 or 5.3, rather than a 5.7l mated motor.
Personally, i'd get one mated to a 5.3 in case the torque converters were different.

I did find out that a 4l80E has six torque converter bolts not three like the 4l60E, of course that was after the motor was in and trying to bolt it up. Seems like three do fine though :D

What he said. To add to that, the earlier cases do not have a hole for the bellhousing bolt at 12 o clock. LS engines do not use the bolt at 2 o clock, the hole is cast into the trans but the hole is untapped in the block. So if you get the older you will be shy 2 bellhousing bolts(studs).

What happened to your trans? and why cant we just get yours built?
Used is just a crappy option IMO, unless your a used car dealer or are going to sell it.

just was hoping to throw a used one in for cheap instead of getting it rebuilt, the trucks a beater anyways. getting it rebuilt is still an option just seeing if this option would have worked. looks like to much screwing around to overcome the cost difference. thanks for all the info.

The issue is, unless you buy used from a private party you know personally, you NEVER know what you are going to get. Just no way to test. And lots of effort to swap.

If you are really good/fast at swapping autos (few are), then it might make sense to gamble. Most just bite the bullet, and get it built properly wiht whatever upgrades they want. Last i checked, a 4l60e rebuild (on teh early 90's units), with a good cooler and some basic upgrades was in the $1500 range.

Way cheaper than rebuilding a 4l80e.

I keep an eye on an ebay store (Just Chevy Trucks) "just in case", they emphasize that these newer ones are very year specific.
