99 silverado 5.3 4x4 4l60e

govlock broke, drove it home in 4hi, replace rear axle, go to drive truck and when in D, trans just slips, sounded like the TC was knocking, was 1 qt low, filled and retried, same thing, if you manually put it into 1st, it will accelerate and move, unless you go wtfo, then it slips, same in 2nd and 3rd, im thinkin bad convertor, what do you guys think?

tia

Probably not, bad converters mean no movement, since that is what it needs to start moving.

Never heard of a converter that "sort of" worked, either they work or they don't. Might make some noise and still work, but they are relatively simple, there is nothing that will allow more "slippage" when broken in a converter, that won't ruin everything else in short order.

drop the pan and have a look....

oddly coincidental that it happened right after you replaced the axle.

Ive had similar things happen to a 700r4... it was usually something F'd in the valve body... if youre real brave, drop the valve body and check for any plugs that may have come out (blown out?) or something clogging passages.. just be careful of the location and number of check balls....

keep us posted

well its not my truck and it was slipping on his way home with the broken axle, so i imagine he caused some overheating..

have someone scan it and see if it as a p1870 code, if it does and the fluid is still good and pan is clean you can fix it with some pump and valve body mods while its in the vehicle.. if the fluid is dark and burnt, its too late and he needs a o/h... Nate

Does the truck have Autotrac(k)? Sounds like the transfer case could be the culprit. Have you tried any other gear in the case? AFAIK, the Autotrac cases have clutches in them like the transmission, and when they fail, you have slippage and no go power. Could have killed it on the way home with the dead rear.

fluid is clean and red... ill check it for a code this weekend, thanks, ill also look into that autotrac, what tcase would it have?
