i got a 95 4L60E with no reverse, and a loud loud from between the TC and the front of the trans,no codes, otherwise drives great and had all the forward gears and no slipping.

the transmission was bought rebuilt 3 years ago by the PO, with no receipt found.

most common problem that i read about the no reverse and 1st is a broken or cracked "sunshell or gear" i can buy this at the local at the transmission shop.

i need to replace the "sunshell or gear" and the front noise

but i do not have the special transmission tools at all for disassemble, do i need them or can i improvise?

If the sun shell breaks you will lose second and reverse but not first. If that is what is broke though you can improvise to get to it. Although I wouldn't feel good about tearing a tranny apart to just replace one part. It would probably get you by though, if that is what's wrong.

i will replace the o rings, and seals, but should i replace the clutches and the bushing while i am in there no matter if they are not bad

whats a good rebuild kit that that wont run up the bill

not running high horse power
DD with medium off roading on the weekends
wont likely be pulling to many trailers, and just 1 driver, me

I would say if they look fine you would be fine for quite a while. But I would let some one else chime in to say for sure.

If the sun shell breaks you will lose 2nd gear as well. This would seem like a massive bog or engine lugging coming out of 1st. It's likely that the reverse input clutch is not engaging, which could be a seal, a stuck valve or just plain worn out clutch. (I was thinking one of the sprags had to engage for reverse, but I would have to dig a manual out...)

Unless you're in a big rush, tear the thing down first and see what parts are bad - then order parts. What all gets replaced depends on your plans. If you only need another 80,000 miles of stock-ish usage then returning it to the original setup is fine. It's easy to get carried away with upgrades and you'll have to decide on a case-by-case basis which ones you want.

As for special tools, of course several are recommended. There are some clutches very hard to get apart without the right compressor. And you need a way to size the teflon seals, etc. You can get by many of them by building your own equivalent tool as you go, but it's also possible to mess some stuff up. If the trans looks mostly good inside, you might choose to only tear in as far as the input clutches and not have to tackle some of the challenging parts.

Is the 4L60E a "relatively simple" trans? Maybe. But if you haven't been inside one before it can seem very complicated. There are several hundred pieces which all must be installed exactly right. If something isn't exactly right you get to tear the thing out again and start over.

You will loose both second and 4th gear with a sun shell failure so you may have more problems than you anticipate, but then you may have less problems too. There is a small metal plate under the rear of the valve body held in place with three small bolts with 8mm heads. This plate covers the reverse apply passages in the case and if it loosens up you loose reverse as the oil bleeds past the plate and gaskets. This plate is sometimes not torqued well by the builder since it is hard to get to once the valve body is in place with a conventional socket, you have to use an open end wrench. Pull the pan and check these bolts before you go further, and while the pan is off check for excessive debris that could indicate clutch failure. Reverse is the very last section in the trans so a complete teardown will be involved. I agree with Blue85 in that you should teardown first and see what kind of items you need before any purchases are made. First part ordered should be a good, well illustrated book on this trans which should be read and understood before you turn the first wrench.

alright all order a book on the transmission, i looked up this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQgQIyIhI0o&list=UUuJNRbjB41BP8SRqN0AKfZw

he tears down a 4l60e, only special tool was a 1st/reverse gear removal tool at the very end of the transmission.

and before the reverse gave out it felt like the breaks were applied and would not reverse, i gave it more gas until it would reverse, and then the next time i tried to use reverse it was completly gone

all tear into it this weekend and first inspect the parts that are broken and replace as needed
