So I am getting this 1991 crew cab which stock should have a 4L80e /205 with a 350TBI.
I will confirm once I get it, and if it is, I want the 4L80e but I have a buyer that will take the truck with a th400 or a Manual, so my question is:
Will the engine be fine if the 4L80e goes away? I mean I know the computer is shared or am I mistaken?
As for controling the 4L80e where I am using it, I know of some options but wouldn't mind getting a link for a cheap method or make this a thread for options to control your 4l80e.
I should have the truck by next week end.:woot:
 
interesting, ... no one knows anything... Or maybe the gurus are are all out for saturday night.

man, I think It'd be a bummer to split up such a cool combo in a rig thats getting supper hard to find these days...just my .02

I have now 3 Crew cabs, I want a diesel crew cab with a 4l80e, I couldn't find one for the price of the 3 I have.
I will put theother trucks back together and I already have buyers for the trucks.:waytogo:
I am even trying to save a fourth one from being cut up, I have running gear to put together a few trucks so as long as I can find good clean bodies I can put together a truck.:haha:
 
Honestly you got a screaming deal on that truck, if it has a 4L80E you can leave it together put in on Ebay or something else that is national and just about triple your money.
 
No the TBI has nothing to do with the trans but like i said keep it together and sell it if its a 4l80E was a one year deal only.

The diesel's were a multiple year and many different truck deal
 
On the 91 V3500 there is a single computer that is indeed shared between the tbi / engine management and the transmission. I don't know what it will do without transmission feedback but I would think a custom cheap would fix it. :dunno:
 
I'm with the others here who think you should leave it together. You can sell it for more than enough to cover the cost of finding a replacement 4L80e.

Look for a 16147060 ECM for the TBI & Trans controller to replace your original computer.

Well I didn't say I was parting it yet, I will be driving it while I build one of my other crew cabs :) I might like it just the way it is.
It's just that I can't seem to find the one I want diesel with a 4l80e, so I might build it.
 
I think I just read somewhere on here that the '91 vans had a stand alone controller for the 4L80E but i'm not sure. I think '91 was the only year. See if you can PM 4x4high because I think he is the one that posted about it. If you can get that controller and then have the tbi ecm burned then I think it would work fine.
 
You can always piggy back a controller as well, but it does not take too much more work to just swap to a newer/better one. I'm pretty sure that the 14167060 was used in the vans as well from 1991 - 1994 (or 1995).
 
If you swap out the 4L80E for a TH400, the PCM won't be getting a VSS reading from the trans and the engine won't run quite right. You should be able to get around this with a different or custom chip.

As for running the 4L80E in a standalone installation, you can either buy one of the aftermarket standalone controllers, get a factory controller used with the 4L80E that were behind the deisels and in the '91 vans, or build your own. The 4L80E's and 4L60E's use a harness that has some connectors the same, but the 4L80E have a couple of additional connectors.

It really isn't too difficult to build your own controller if you are somewhat electronically inclined. I have read that the best PCM to use for this is the 16197427, as opposed to the 16147060 PCM that Keitha mentioned. Here are a couple threads that discuss how to build one.....

Yeah I had been in that thread, and now I know what I want to do for my project, and by the way in the meantime I parted this truck and sold all the parts, but I bought a core 4l80e to rebuild myself and I will be doing all manual, now that I found I can do that, it's what I am doing.
