I have a 4L80E from a 96 (or 98, I can't remember) C3500 that I can get for free and I had a few questions about it. On the side it has
Hydra-matic
24204250

There's a sticker that has a bar code that reads
8BCP
24204515
WILLOW RUN
618BCPH00044064

and there is also a metal tag that says
B CP
98 8 105

Does anyone know what any of it means?

bla bla bla. basic factory info and what it was speced for.

biggest thng to watch out for is around then thay split the cooler line location. 1 front and 1 rear. get the hottest fluid out faster from the rear of the tranny i guess.

why what ya gona use it for or in ?

The "8" indentifies the year, the "BCP" indicates what kind of vehicle it came out of (2500-3500 2WD 5.7 Gas engine). This is a good model to have , it should have the return cooler line about halfway down the center of the trans on the passenger side. It would be a great build candidate if you are thinking about a conversion.

I'm going to build a 454 to put in my truck and the 700r4 won't last long from what I've read. I don't know what transfer case I'm going to use yet, I have followed your posts in this thread
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166233 and your 4L80/doubler build here http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=253000 . I was thinking about either a doubler or atlas but not sure which would be best for the money.

Thanks. it has the cooler line closer to the rear. I did plan to convert it to 4x4 or atleast make a spacer like in the first link above and run a 205 at first.

I figured I might as well get it, it's free and if I don't use it I can just sell it. It doesn't have a harness or controller though. I've been looking around at aftermarket harnesses and stand alone controllers and they have the same parts for the 4L60E and 4L80E, so if I found a 91 blazer or suburban with a 4L60E in a junkyard would the harness and controller work with this transmission, or will I have to get one from a mid to late 90's diesel that doesn't control the engine? Or can I get a controller that controls the engine and not use that part of it?

Well, you can't beat the price! We use the Compushift controller system which has proven to be very reliable and easy to use. It does not require a laptop for programming and comes with a control module for easy parameter changes by just scrolling through a menu and pressing a button. It isn't the cheapest way to go, but it is all inclusive and easy to set up and use.

You can go this rout and save a ton of money. Look for a 14167060 and just use the tranny controll side.

Assuming you are talking about your '85, you may want to think about just swaping to a better ECM (like the 14167060 or other PCM type controller) completely. It is not too much more work than adding a stand alone. There are plenty of pin-out diagrams around here for the wiring conversion.

Well I swapped in TPI and using the 1227727 with it. I haven't even looked to see what I can do with that, if anything. But the trans will go in after I build the 454 (unless my 700r4 blows up before then) and I haven't decided what fuel system I'm going to use, the FI has made a huge improvement on the 350.

It really isn't too difficult to build your own controller if you are somewhat electronically inclined. I have read that the best PCM to use for this is the 16197427, as opposed to the 16147060 PCM that Keitha mentioned.

I just did a quick search and found that the 16197427 is more available then the 16147060 also.
