I am looking to put a 4L80E in my 82 K20. This morning I found a 91 3/4 ton van with a toasted 4L80E. I originally thought that 91 (gas) was only year for the standalone controller (I know 91 to 93 diesels have them).

So I double checked on the internet to make sure before I leave to go buy and am coming up with mixed answers:doah: on 91 (gas) 4L80E standalone controller.

Does anybody have any input?

Thanks

Kenny

I don't have an answer about the factory standalone controller, but I thought I'd let you know that you can build your own trans controller for a lot less than the aftermarket controllers. You will need a 16197427 PCM from a '94-'95 truck, a TPS, and a few other things I can't remember ATM. I haven't built one yet, I just heard how to do it a few months ago. Here's a couple links that explain it better than I can.....

There's another thread on http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard but I can't find it right now. I'll find it tonight and post it here.

Thanks for the info. :waytogo:

Hey Captainfab, thanks for the links but I dont have an ecm to pigyback off of. I dont know how I came up with the standalone gas controller, guess Im just absorbing too much info LOL

Yes 1991 gas was the only year for a 4L80E with a stand alone controller. I have a friend with a 1991 burb with this set-up factory.

Thanks for your input. I passed on the harness and I went ahead and ordered a Baumann Optishift (I got in on a group buy).

I am still interested in this topic though. The 2wd and 4wd are different, being the 2wd has 2 plugs and the 4wd has 3 plugs (I think). So it would have needed some modification.

Hey 4x4 High, is your friends Suburban a 454? Because after atleast 6 hours of research today, all of the different forum posts with a 350/4L80E have been integrated controllers.

Thanks again

Kenny

It will be here in 2 to 3 weeks and I have a line on a 4L80E so its going to be about a month (it all goes well:rolleyes:).
My wife is really excited about being able to drive 65-70 mph without spinning 3200 RPM.
