Wasilla AK,
has any one ever replaced a 4L80E with a TH400??

I have a 91 V3500 with a 6.2 and a smoked 4L80E and a 2000.00 rebuild for the tranny in a truck I paid 500.00 for just doesn't sound appealing

The spline output should be the same (32) but the bolt pattern may be different going to the T-case. It would suck to give up overdrive though...

There is nothing else you can pick up used to get you by? I would imagine that the entire trans isnt toast. A complete rebuild I can see setting you back $2k, but to a temp bandaid fix til you can afford a rebuilt unit shouldnt run that much.

I agree that it would suck to lose overdrive, most people go through all kinds of hell to find that 91 model year with the 4l80e/np205. You would also have to get a new adapter to go from the th400 to the 205 since there is a bit of a difference between them if Im not mistaken, not to mention driveshafts since there is a 2 or 3 inch difference in length between the 4l80e and th400. BTW how much would you want for that certain adapter??? :D

Just out of curiosity is that $2k quote from a shop or is that what you're expecting it to cost? My k3500 has 138k miles on the stock 4L80E so I've been keeping my eyes and ears open to see what I'm in for when it finally goes.

You can get a 4x4 4L80E from monster transmissions for $2k and they're definitely not the cheapest game in town so I bet you could do it at a local tranny shop for quite a bit less.

Heck it even includes a new Torque Converter, a 1 year unlimited mile warranty AND shipping!

Front pump is toast and it needs a new convertor so thats a 1000.00 right there plus 500.00 for the Hughes Racing master kit . plus shipping of said parts and the labor to install.

the local shops have quoted me 1900.00-2100.00 to do a stock rebuild with a rebuilt convertor.

I've also looked into Monster, and a few other places. but shipping is 500-600 bucks up here to AK.

Its a decent truck but I'm cheap bastard lol
and I have a TH400/NP205 with all the d-shafts from a 90 V3500
and a SM465/NP205 from a 86 crewcab with the shafts

I want to keep the O/D and I wont be throwing this stuff away it will get rebuilt later and used in another project
