What stand alone controllers are you guys using for your 4l80e? I just picked up a '91 suburban that had a 6.2 (no engine) and from what I've read the 4l80e that came behind that engine for '91 was fairly unique and there isn't much aftermarket support as far as controllers go. I was originally going to use the TCM that came with it, but someone has already helped themselves to it.

Also need to pick up an SYE for the np241 sitting behind it - ORD? JB? Others?

www.usshift.com for standalone kit unit .

will need to update the trans harness / plug combo tho . 91-93 was problematic . unless its already been done .

think i heard jb was backordered delay . call ord for a kit .

I was looking at usshift last night, quick4 worth the premium over the quick2?

Most of the issues with the early 4L80E trans was with the valve body. By 1993 they had those issues ironed out. Your chances of finding a 1991 to 92 4L80E are slim. It is better to get one that is 1993 model or newer. I think the Quick 2 is a piggy back model that requires the original ECM/PCM to run it (I may be wrong though). The Quick 4 model is a complete stand alone. The quick 4 requires their wire harness as well. Between the Quick 4 controler and harness you are talking a little over $800.

I've got a '91 4l80e already, came with the suburban I just picked up. Right now the controller and harness is pricing out to be right around 800 depending on what updates need to be done to the trans (harness and solenoid). For $800 I wonder if it would be worth getting a reman'd TCM w/PROM. The reason I bought a '91 suburban with diesel is the transmission was standalone from the factory...but with the computer gone I didn't know if it would be wise to get a reman'd unit, or just go aftermarket controller.

I think you can go with a manual valve body for these things at a cheaper price. I do not know a whole lot about the manual valve body for the 4L80E, but there are some other people on this site that do.

I'll find out soon but I heard MVB shifts pretty hard even when you don't want it to. Thats what I have in the K5 now but hasn't been on the road yet. The cheaper FAST system is suppose to be better these days. I got one for my M1008 but never installed the trans and not sure I ever will.

Powertrain Control Solutions TCM2000 - good piece of gear, full table adjustability. The 2800 supercedes.

I have the FAST TCU. Happy with it so far. Integration to the FAST EFI for TCS and RPM was nice. Programmer is kinda rudimentary though. But, realistically, I don't have enough seat time with it for my opinion to matter here.

I'm still wondering what TCM is being used in the HMMWV's. I'm not totally up on the HMMWV and all it's iterations (6.2, 6.5, 6.5 turbo) and whether electronics other than trans control ever got integrated, but there are plenty of 4L80E HMMWV's still being used that run TCM's.

Maybe they are "hardened" enough to not be a low-cost solution?

Read about folks using a 411 ecm. Need to rig a tps input and a tach input I think. Here's a link.

Old Post but I just saw this. The numbers you're looking for that are the OEM standalone tcu are 16147609 or 16173659 for 91-93 and 16196390 for 94+

That's good to know, ended up going with the TCI controller. Still need to install the trans though...

Bringing this post back to life. How's the trans running?
I'm looking for a controller that will allow the highway set up and switch it when I hit the hills. I'm wanting to lock the converter up in all 3 gears for the steep mountain ground. At 12k lbs, I dont want the torque slipping the whole time on a 3 mile climb.

your requests can be done with the unit i linked above . 4 saved shift on fly programs and options to set up locked convt in gears .

I use the USShift @sweetk30 mentions. You can set up several shift tables or "tunes" and switch between them; I want to say there are 4. On mine it locks up the torque converter in 2nd-4th when you manually select the gears. This works great for long slow climbs when I'm towing the camper because I tend to end up in 2nd gear. When I put the gear shift into 2nd, the controller will lock up the torque converter. I will do the same if I put the gear selector in 3rd as well.

What about the need to update the pre 96 electrics?

What kind of temps do you see on long pulls in 2nd?

I'm loving my TCI EZ TCU, really easy to install and easy to setup with a lot of customization. Unless you are pre-93 you don't need to update internal controls. I did that as part of my rebuild anyway. Sorry, writing this on my phone or I would go into more detail.
