Anyone using the 4L80E overdrive in place of a th-400? They are both 32 spline so it should not be too hard of a swap. I'm using Multiport fuel injection and I though maybe I should step up with a modern trans as well but use a manual valvebody.

It has to use a computer to control its shift points. The diesel 4L80's have stand alone computers (i.e. they are the only OEM controllers that can work without all of the OEM engine controls being there).

There are aftermarket controllers too but they are $$.

Most people stick with the TH400 because it takes a long time to recoup the investment into a strong OD trans.

Yes it cab be done, but the trans it self is 3 inches longer so the driveshafts need to be modified, the linkages lengthened, and the cross member relocated.

if you have efi then easy swap. trans needs a map signal/raw tack signal/coolent temp signal/brake light triger think thats it.

What injection setup are you running? I would probably only consider the trans swap if I was using a system that I could use the GM PCM with, to keep it as simple and cheap as possible. Not a cheap swap any way you look at it.

When you go Manual valve body the computer goes away. There are a few people I have heard of usinig the manual valve body kit and liking them.

I have spent time with an after market controled unit and would not hesitate to spend the $$$ for one.

Yeah, I love shifting the gears myself so the manual valvebody is great, and I have a rebuilt 4L80E here in the shop. I planned to just move the engine forward a few inches and leave the driveshafts and t-case alone. I cant see any real costs besides a little sweat and beer???

More input??

I thought even the manual valve body was expensive for the 4L80E?

I'm biased though, I hate auto's...if you want to shift, do it properly. :)
