My truck stopped going into 3rd gear so I took it to Aspen automotive down the street. They said it needs a rebuild and quoted me $2000 which comes with a 3yr/36,000 mile warranty. I researched a bunch and found prices from $400 to $5000. Is $2000 a good price for this kind of work?

I build transmissions out of my garage. I charge $1500 on a 4l80 bench job. Thats a stock style overhaul with a performance valve body kit & a new TC. I give a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty. I usually charge another $300 if I pull & replace it. I also Itemize my bills so you can see excatly what you are paying for. I don't think their price is out of line, especially if they have a good reputation.

Not bad, I bought a complete new 4L80 from Monster trans with converter shipping everything but takeout and install it was $2,400.

If you want to travel you could talk with Randy Rod at Jimmys 4x4 in Cortez. He does good work but you have to get the transmission to him.

swap it your self and use one of these.

otherwise if local do lots of resurch and find a good shop with real warrenty. 3/36k seems kind of low on mileage if you ask me now adays.

and dont forget to flush the coolerlines and stock /aftermarket cooler . dont wana toss all that trash in the new trans

and read here for tranny cooling info . http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3020914#post3020914

I think the price is actually a bit low if the builder is replacing all bands, sprags, bushings, bearings, electronics etc and making requisite upgrades to the valve body and pump and supplying a torque converter as well. Warranty is above average in comparison to most shops across the country.

What if it's just a 2-3 solenoid. Less then 50 bucks.

I've always hated transmission repair shops. They pray on the fact that most people don't know anything about transmissions. In that $2000 price tag, short of labor to R/R the trans there might be $200 bucks in parts.

They wont replace any hard parts that aren't bad, that's for sure.
