My transmission has a whine in first gear only... anyone familiar with this? its in my 01 2500HD. seems to be common but my searches turn up unconfirmed.

I've had a few company trucks that did that as well. Most of them were high milers that'd been flogged their whole lives and seemed no worse for wear

A lot of 4l80e's have that whine. You hear them driving by at stores all the time. I personally like it.
Mine has it...I like it. Its a little like my allison.
Well, I've got about 3000 miles on a rebuild so I'll have to listen harder, as I don't hear it over the motor.
Very common to the 4L80E, you can tear it down and change out the planetary set but that is a lot of trouble. If you don't mind a little noise, leave it alone and keep truckin', the sets we have pulled in the past for noise issues were not damaged but had some unusual wear marks on the gears, possibly from the way they were originally machined?? This wear did not compromise function, just induced noise.
